Would be grateful for forumites' recommendations of somewhere to go locally for a really good Sunday roast.
Looking for a pub where you can if you wish just eat in the bar and have the main course Sunday roast and a pint/glass of wine for a reasonable price!
Big plus if the roast beef is cooked medium rare!

The most popular form of sunday roast in very recent times seems to be supplied by the various Carvery's dotted around. The demand seems to be growing as they are forever packed...all you can eat for £4.99 or thereabouts. Toby or Kittiwake or similar.
Its hard to find a good pub doing it now... I did go to Lydden a few times but I think they have all shut down recently. The Lantern Inn in Martin is a favourite, very pleasant in summer but cant recall if they do roasts.

You can barely do a good quality roast at home for £4.16 a head (that's £4.99 without the VAT) unless it's battery chicken. These places are either feeding you rubbish or they are using the food as a loss leader to get bums on seats.
Sue's comment about medium rare beef is interesting. You will only find it at the Prince Albert in Alfred Sq in Deal. But you will pay much more than £4.99. And you will have to book a couple of weeks in advance.

We tend to go to the Ramada sort of monthly, you can add a tenner to 4.99 but it's very good and Penny is always welcoming.

We recently paid £9.95 in the Cotswolds for a main course of rare roast beef with all the trimmings which we felt was good value given the cost of preparing it at home. We aren't bothered about starters or sweets.
The Prince Albert sounds a great option for the rare beef - it must be good if you have a book 2 weeks in advance!

The Archer heard some great comments about their roasts, have yet to try it though x
We had a horribly disappointing meal at Cullens yard at the weekend when we had family to stay - embarrassingly bad if I am honest. But my fabulous husband is taking me to dinner at The Allotment on Friday as a birthday pressie, first time of going there and we don't get out much! Too busy, usually. I am looking forward to it and will report back!!
Terry -I love your signiture!!

Some months ago we were taken to the Princes Golf Club restaurant at Sandwich, for Sunday lunch, and it was excellent, lovely ambience, it was a carvery on a Sunday, excellent in every way, relaxing atmosphere with views of the sea, we would definitely go again. Well recommended. You have to book of course.

Happy Birthday Bern - and Happy Birthday Barry for Saturday.
Getting back to roast dinners at various restaurants; the roast potatoes let most of them down - the veg are usually good, meat's done well but the roasted spuds are usually awful; can't remember anywhere, where the roast potatoes have been lovely and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
Let me know when you find a place that does them like that.

Thank you all for your birthday wishes, perhaps I should wait though to say that tomorrow!!!
Anyway
Roger you are so right about roast potatoes, I have rarely found any restaurant do good ones as you say, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

the best results i have had for roast potatoes is to boil them for 20 minutes then dip them into a deep fat fryer for a few minutes.
cheating maybe but does the trick.
many happy returns to barry and bern.
