Thank goodness the lead party in our coalition has a culture of open debate rather than muttering behind closed doors. A bit of dissent in the ranks helps to concentrate the minds of the leaders on what the national consensus is, rather than on their own convictions.
Another issue on which the leadership needs a re-think is Europe and I predict a few speeches on the matter at the Tory conference which will make DC quite uncomfortable. He needs to be told, and to take on board, that the electorate want to be part of a Europe-wide free trade area and nothing more.

You are absolutely right in both comments Peter. The EU is going to be an ever increasing issue along with the need for more action for growth, de-regulation, business tax cuts etc.

the sweeteners for conference have already been given with the rubbish collection dosh and the raising of the motorway speed limit.
both will go down well, the big problem as stated above is the european issue.
dave is clearly pro european whilst the audience will be at least 90% anti european.
conferences nowadays are usually stage managed well enough for this to be swept under the carpet.

DC is not 'pro-European' but he is holding together a coalition with the most blindly pro-EU political party in the UK
I don't quite understand why it is Healthy Debate when it is the right leaning parties but Chaotic Arguments when it is the left.........although I agree that dissent and debate are crucial to democracy.

whenever parties infight they usually come up with the "we are broad church" routine.
i would be more interested in dave and george's response to the question from the senior backbencher as to where growth will come from.

Top Tories on the eve of their Conference, after seventeen months discover we need economic growth.? They also say the `Big Society`pledge should be kicked into touch.
Unfortunately they also say Tories should drop their Green Strategy.Bit of a mystery here because they don`t have one and they did try to sell our Forests One of the many `U` turns.
Flashman is most definitely pro European.
Wonder if these people will speak up or is the Tory whip on?

i think it i fairly certain that dave will set his bullyboys on any dissenter, the unfortunate that wanted the ban on circus animals is testimony to that.

rather a vague comment in post 12 barry.
what is it that we don't understand, please clarify.
you have made disparaging comments about the other conferences before and after they took place.
rest assured there will be criticisms before during and after the blues one.
