I always think spelling and sentence construction is important to show you care about presenting what you are saying, and to avoid any confusion about the meaning of what you are posting.
A favourite bugbear though - "Howard,you must
of been surprised.."

If you google 'improve your spelling' you will find some excellent hints about words you find difficult. Words you have to look up regularly - write them down on a list so it is handy. Read a lot. Many useful ways for you to make a better impression!

Very true Kath but would it help with someone like my grandson who has dyslexia.
Strangely or should that be thankfully this was only diagnosed when his uni tutor spotted his problem last year even though his mother had queried his apparent word blindness with various teachers since he was quite young.

Thank you Roger for your support. Dyslexia is a reading disorder it has nothing to do with spelling.
The reason I commented on spelling was because the title of this thread was clearly spelt wrong
I can forgive mistakes in sentences however is it to much to ask to spell the heading of the thread
correctly or even nearly correctly. This forum has become a closed forum, new members clearly
are not welcome.

I stand corrected on the point of dyslexia, which I assumed, wrongly of course, being 'word blindness' would affect writing and spelling as well as reading.
I don't think its a matter of new members not being welcome, I think its a matter of rude posts not being welcome. If perhaps you had posted clearly, in nicely constructed sentences, exactly the point you were trying to make, instead of appearing to criticize every member of the forum, you might have (not 'of') received a more pleasant reaction.

One of the symptoms of dyslexia, amongst many, is very poor spelling.

On the subject of thread titles. It is simply a fact of life that spell checking is not a function supported within the thread-title-text-box.
But, joy of joys, it is now possible to edit thread-titles now.
Generally, web conversation wise, we all must expect to get as good as we give;stridency matched with stridency etc. etc.
You are very welcome Eleanor, welcome to be a part of the forum, and welcome to state your point of view, and freely able to feel miffed also, as occasion demands. As are we all.
As you are here Eleanor, why not sit for a spell?

Sorry Eleanor but you have lost me, you started "this thread" with the word spelling which is correct.
New members are very welcome as their opinions can breathe fresh air into the place but as a new member it is not a good idea to criticise us in a less than tactful manner.
This is a description of an adult dyslexic,........."although they tend to read more slowly than non-dyslexics and perform more poorly at spelling" .

I'm glad that you brought this up Eleanor H as I meant to point out this one to you at the time but didn't have the courage! There are two 'i's' in ridiculed. You're not really a rude person.......just grumpy with a short memory and possibly lack comprehension of the English language!
Back to school or should it be Spec Savers?

I agree with Eleanor. It's dreadful. I find the low level of basic literacy on this forum extremely off-putting.

The opposite of dyslexia is my case:
Reading comes very quickly, by instantly viewing a whole phrase and immediately analysing its construction firstly in nouns and verbs, rather than reading it literally word for word.
Paragraphs separated by a blank line are helpful, as it makes this kind of reading so much easier.

Interesting comment Bob
how people change lol
Still, most contributors make the point that we are all on here to give a point of view,
We should not restrict it in any way.
It's an interesting discussion, but my view is, live and let live, whether people can spell or not, we should not attempt to stop them contributing.

I have been a long term reader of this forum but this is the first time I have ever felt the need to post.
I also agree with Eleanor, what is wrong with pointing out a massive spelling mistake? Does it warrant a gang of 10 to 12 regular's to close ranks and ridicule this person? (looking at you Jan, Howard, Keith etc). I realise that you lot will go through this message and look for any error so you can have a laugh amongst yourselves so be my guess. Don't pick on someone because they don't spend their free time wandering about the Dover area taking pictures of empty shop units with Terson signs up in the window or just happen to be under the age of 70 years old and not just waiting for god!
Also Bob Whysman, you must be so pleased with yourself with that pant wettingly funny put down. Do you like picking on girls? Maybe you have a problem? Eleanor was standing up for the hopeless man that sells the big issue outside boots, there was a comment from one of the regular's mocking the mans clothes which has since been deleted. Maybe all of Dovers finest here will pick on someone that can defend themselves next time rather than a homeless man or a kindly person trying to defend them. Probably not.

Ken
Eleanor made a point which had some support, but in a debate surely others can differ in that view?.
I just gave an alternative view, no ridicule in my posts

First. Welcome, Ken Masters, to the Dover Forum.
You ask, Ken, "what is wrong with pointing out a massive spelling mistake?"
We could discuss the merits of 'wrong', but the content of post number one rather speaks for itself...
"Did any one go to school on this forum as the spelling is appalling."

When we as regular posting members are attacked for our spelling we are bound to defend ourselves. Eleanor's opening post was downright rude to every member of this forum by inferring we were ALL bad spellers which is why I made my comment about tact.
As for the ridicule comment maybe I should draw your attention to # 33 from Eleanor which is not exactly a pleasant way to talk to someone ..........."It looks like there is only room for ( one queen bee on here )"
We all know who has problems with spelling and grammar but as they are our internet friends we make allowances. I wonder would Eleanor or Ken point out similar mistakes to a person they have never or only occasionally met in person, I know I wouldn't unless they asked for my opinion.

There was I thinking I was amid friends only to find myself judged for my grammar and punctuation. Having been of the opinion that the conversational style of this forum encouraged everyone and anyone to join in I am upset that I will now feel the need to scrutinise my spelling and will be detered from posting.
I'm not sure I will continue, thanks Eleanor, I now feel more inadequate than ever.
