On Saturday 7th October,Speaker's Day of the Confederation of the Cinque Ports was hosted at Dover. This happens here once every seven years by rotation around the five ports and two ancient towns.A procession of town mayors and other local officials resplendent in red robes, cocked hats, bearing maces and regalia, wound its way behind a splendid macquette of a Channel swimmer and a Scots piper through the town centre to the seafront where at the pier there was a moving blessing of the sea.At a subsequent lunch attended by the Deputy Constable of Dover Castle, preceded by a fire hose display in the harbour by Dover's two tugs, in the nearby Dover Patrol (now la Bella Vita),Dover's Mayor Sue Jones spoke of the importance of making these ancient rituals of heritage of interest to the young people of today.BUT there was no advance publicity nor any local press reportage afterwards. How therefore can such importance be made relevant to them? Does anyone have any photos of this event to share?
