Unfortunately, as a heavily unionised industry, able, along with the dockers and the colliers to bring the country to its knees (did anyone actually ever get fired for anything without the bruvvers threatening to down tools) it must have been great to work for. Job for life even when your role was redundant.
In terms of 'customer Service' however .....
While the Japanese were enjoying their first High Speed Train in 1964 I was still at Bridgwater railway station getting covered in smoke collecting engine numbers.

Drat, and I was feeling so aspirational too.

How sad that British Rail are removing First Class travel. My late husband worked for British rail for many years .When he died I received a pension and retained my first class pass. There are restrictions on what time you can travel which is fair enough. So not only am I taxed on my pension but first class class travel to be.withdrawn.

I also have restricted free travel on the trains and always sat in the 1st class seats which always seemed virtually the same as the ordinary ones on Southeastern.
The 1st class could be completely different comfort wise in other areas, I was even offered free coffee on one journey but that was about ten years ago.

Never seen the point of 1st class on the Southeastern. Elsewhere the seating is what's known as 2+1. Down here it's 2+2 the same as standard class. I'm surprised it's lasted this long, HST Javelin's are all standard class.

Always been a member, however all I've wanted is someone to negotiate my terms, conditions and pay while being there to hold my hand when I'm being bollocked again by management.
I don't wish to join anyone to support any political party, overthrow any freely elected Government or pass motions on sodding Palestine.

Given that the London Marathon raises huge amounts of money for charity I find it appalling that the rail unions choose today to go on strike.

Some good news for DFLs and those commuting to London ( plus a photo opportunity for young Natalie!)

Yup. A great shame. Carer and I took a train from Ashford to connect with TGV to Aix-en-Provence a few years ago for hols. THE most civilised way to travel IMHO.
