Overcrowded peak services could be solved by either joining 6 cars from Sandwich with 6 cars from Dover at Folkestone (potentially adding 6-9 minutes to journey times) or new rolling stock which allows movement between front 6 and rear 6 which gets around Shakespeare Tunnel safety issue.

Didn't get that one - I can't get out of the front of some 6-car sets. Will just have to rely on slidey doors instead of hinged ones I guess. Oh, most are.

Another extension for Southeastern
https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/east-midlands-south-eastern-and-west-coast-partnership-franchise-updates
With regards to the South Eastern franchise competition, I am also today updating the House that my department is negotiating a short-term extension to the current franchise agreement with Govia while we make a decision on the competition. This will ensure continuity of services for passengers until 10 November 2019, with an option to extend the agreement further to April 2020.howard mcsweeney1- Location: Dover

I don't use the railway but don't hear people complaining much about services to and from Dover anymore so I must assume that things are running relatively smoothly. It seems that nationally travellers would like the services brought back into public ownership but that is more complicated in practice with franchises running out at different times.

stagecoach who wanted to bid on 3 franchises have been told they cant do so, due to pension payments etc.

Odd that the state-owned Dutch railway company can run parts of our rail and bus network, yet we're ideologically opposed to a state-run system. Dialectically speaking, one of capitalism's many internal contradictions I suppose.

Indeed WGS
Abellio (the commercial arm of dutch state railways) runs Scotrail, Greater Anglia, Merseyrail, West Midlands Railway , London Northwestern Railway, East Midlands (awarded this year) and had previously run Northern Rail, it is one of the bidders for Southeastern.
So all the users of these franchises are subsidising dutch train users...

Southeastern, BD, since it's currently subject to a bidding war; but our shabby rail system more generally. Stagecoach, I think you'll find, is an early John Wayne film.
