BarryW, I genuinely don't understand where you get the idea that anyone who doesn't swoon at the feet of the monarchy is boring, grey or envious! I don't need a bunch of strangers who have failed to earn the status to which they have been born largely because their ancestors were devious murdering barons to encourage me to have fun or colour in my life!! I don't envy them diddlysquat, don't believe they are superior, don't see any evidence of their value to me, us or you, and could quite happily live without them. The touristy treasures to which you allude are ours anyway and would draw a crowd whatever. As for Republics being expensive, as mentioned elsewhere - no political system is cheap - democracy isn't cheap but I don't see anyone flooding the streets demanding a dictatorship. And speaking of which, if you look at the characteristics of a dictatorship - which include maintaining the status quo, offering the masses incentives to remain as they are, and suppressing opposition or dissent, I think you may see similarities to our own dear monarchy and elitist brigade!!
I don't need to feel envy or spite - I don't believe these people have anything I could possibly want!!
