The Events Committee of the Town Council are considering having a tilted sign erected on the lawns of the Memorial Garden, in front of the War Memorial.
This sign would be some two metres square (around 6 and a half feet), and the tilt would mean that the front of the sign would be around 30 centimetres (one foot) high, the back some 60 centimetres (two feet) high.
The Committee are suggesting that logos could be displayed, either made from plants or sign-written. Amongst the suggestions for the logos they have offered are "Dover Town Council", "Fairtrade", maybe a poppy wreath for Remembrance Day, or logos of organisations or associations.
The Dover War Memorial Project received a letter this morning about this proposal. The Committee have asked us for comments, and I assume they've asked many other interested parties too.
We have our views, based on the information we've currently received. They're here:

I'm sure there are lots of people on here who have a view too, about this, and would like to express them to the Committee. The Committee have asked that responses in writing should received by the Town Council by 3rd April - the lady to contact is Tracey Hubbard.

Maggie
without seeing the sign it's difficult to comment but the fact that it could have Fair Trade and DTC logos on it makes it sound unattractive and out of keeping. I'm not clear as to why it is needed or what it would add to the memorial.

Mark - yes, these are our thoughts also, amongst others (full list on the DWMP website, at the URL above). We are not convinced by this idea as it stands, and I'm fearful that some people may even deem it offensive to the memory of those they lost.
It's my opinion that there should be much greater consultation before such an idea is considered.
However, the Events Committee have imposed a deadline of 3rd April for responses (in writing), and state that if they receive none, they will assume that people "will be happy with the decision on an apparatus being made and fixed in front of the War Memorial Statue".
so - over to you all, and to Dovorians everywhere, across the globe. Do you like the idea of this sign, or not? If you do, you need do nothing - but if you don't like this idea, or have qualms about it, then the Events Committee need to be made aware.

now ive looked at the evidence im inclined to agree with most of the posts.

From what I read here I agree totally with the comments but I will look into the facts before commenting. It appears to have come from one committee so hasnt been discussed at anything I am involved with. We have a busy two days at DTC leading up to the council meeting weds eve when we will get informed who the Labour party have chosen for Mayor! So will spend a few minutes tomorrow morning when I am there at a business meeting digging some facts up on this.

Thanks, David. I heard from Beth of the Mercury this morning, and she tells me she's trying to contact Ronnie (chairperson of the committee). I did hear that other objections are on the way in to the Council, and we'll be writing in today with our views as well, of course.
Mark, I've checked with Tracey and she confirms there isn't a visual representation available.

I don't want to be rude to anyone, but I can't believe this is a real proposal; I can't believe that anyone would even consider this kind of thing, it's not only bizarre, it flies in the face of decency and respect.
Definitely NO.
Roger
Absolutely.

The Fairtrade or Town Council logos in the War Memorial Garden? I'm speechless.
Preposterous and offensive.
Can't someone see sense?

I must admit that the first I heard of this was reading it on the forums, I do not sit on nor attend the Events Committee. Having spoken to the committee, to ask who's ridiculous idea it was, I can tell you that they are dreadfully serious about it and appear to be defending it only in terms of space. Hopefully it will come before the full council as a "resolve to recommend" and then I can speak against such a nonsense.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Thank you Chris.

I've just sent off an email to Tracey Hubbard at DTC, asking for this NOT to go ahead.
