This has been mentioned on another thread somewhere but this morning I noticed that 4 empty shops had occupants in their doorway. This was just the section from Pencester Rd and Market Square.

I report them on an average once a week. The homeless charity try to sort them out but the rough sleepers still come back.

The reason many homeless do not use hostels is because if they do go to sleep the chance of waking up and finding personal effects such as tobacco still there are remote.

On the subject of these shop door sleepers i noticed a bit of a scam going on involving one,the one nearest to Timpsons. During the week i saw this particular one talking to a young lady in her 30s who was reasonably dressed and didnt look like a rough sleeper. She was arguing with the bloke about nearly having all the money, whatever this was about i dont know, anyway i had seen her during the day asking people for money with a convincing story that she had lost her money and needed the train money to get home. I later saw her asking someone and they gave her some money, later in the day she pulled the same old story again and tricked someone else,i saw her later on asking an elderly man for money for her train home and i stepped in and stopped her,she gave me alot of abuse and dissapeared. So if you,re in town and asked for money for train fare be careful.I should also add that she returned to the shop doorway sleeper several times during the day.I know this is correct as a good mate of mine works in a shop nearby.

Maybe the police should be informed.

Hi too have been referring this issue to Porchlight,DDC etc. trouble is not yet had any feedback as to whether anyone has managed to talk to them. Have alerted street pastors via Soup kitchen. the only Chap I have managed to speak to was genuinely NFA, had papers to prove it. have referred him to another organisation as well. Local businesses are also concerned and one has spoken To Charlie Elphicke. If situation does not improve soon will need further stronger action, Police just ignore them so thought of contacting inspector Steve Barlow as issue just as bad for the town as street drinking and he wants to stop that.

I see Porchlight got a mention there, a few years back I tried to report that an individual probably male was huddled under blankets in a seafront shelter during a very harsh winter. Waste of time that was I had to fill in a questionnaire asking stuff like was he drunk, on drugs, carrying a weapon, liable to be violent, mental health issues the list went on. I am hardly likely to approach and ask if he had a gun especially if it turned out he had so my report was rejected.

I walked along the other day and have seen 3 doors have been used. with matresses and everything ... Looks very sad.
In general I dont have an issue with homeless people ... but I do have an issue if it is scam.
Anyhow I hope these people get helped one way or the other... otherwise it will get worse :(

We,ve often had the odd one sleeping in a doorway in the town, but then suddenly in the space of just a few weeks we now have three or four all sleeping in the same area. They might have come together for safety, but it does seem abit strange.

From what I have read on here and elsewhere it seems like a scam, it would be interesting to know if these areas are occupied after the pubs close and the town is more or less empty of people.

The shop itself is quite smart. He'll be installing a wardrobe next. It does our town no favours whatsover

That bedding looks suspiciously clean for a rough sleeper.

That's what i thought, convinced it is a scam now. There was a bloke back in the early 90's that used to catch the train from somewhere in Hertfordshire to London change into filthy clothes in a toilet and then sit out on the pavement in affluent areas such as Kensington, Chelsea and Belgravia. Averaged £200 per day then changed back into his normal clothes with the tramp's stuff put in his holdall. Even had the cheek to have an annual season ticket on the railway.
