    Good Morning

Just a couple of items for you today:

    Running for children with Leukaemia
Shopping locally - for everyone's benefit

    Children with Leukaemia
A local Dover lady is running in this year's London Marathon to help raise funds for children with Leukaemia.

Here's her story; please do donate if you can.

Hi, my name is Claire Jones, I am a typical working wife and mum with 2 teenagers and live in Dover. I am also a keen but very amateur runner in my spare time, and I am currently in training for the Virgin London Marathon that takes place on 17th April this year. I have a place with Children with Leukaemia and I have pledged to raise £2000 for them.

Please help me reach and if possible exceed my fundraising target. Let me explain what they do, I hope you will share my enthusiasm for their work and pledge a little something in support. No amount is too small.

Children with Leukaemia is a charity I am proud to be associated with, as they work hard to improve both the life chances and the quality of life of children coping with leukaemia, as well as supporting their families.

It is the most common childhood cancer, affecting up to 500 children every year in the UK. Fifty years ago almost all children diagnosed with acute leukaemia died, often within weeks. Advances in treatment and care mean that today four out of five children survive. However there is still a long way to go. Treatment is gruelling and the future very uncertain for those it strikes.

    Please visit my fundraising page

to make a donation, and there you will also find a link to my training blog if you want to find out how my training is going and how I am preparing for the Big Day.

Thank you so much for your support, it means a lot to me, but most importantly it will go towards making a real difference to children and families coping with leukaemia.

I have attached a longer version of Claire's story to this email, it has been checked for viruses, so is safe to download.

    Supporting Dover, by shopping local.

A number of shops have opened in Dover recently, which can only be good news.

To encourage even more shops to open and help create a vibrant Town, we should try and shop local; here are a few reasons why:

    SHOP LOCAL

We all still need to spread the word about the benefits of using local, shops and services.

Here are some points in favour of shopping local that you can put to your friends, family and of course if you are a business, your customers:

YOU WILL BE HELPING YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY -

    1. Local, independent businesses generally create higher-paying jobs for local people so you will be keeping your friends and neighbours in worthwhile, better-paid jobs.

    2. More of your money is able to be reinvested in your community - where it belongs - on the things that matter to you!

    3. For every £10.00 spent in an independent shop, £25 is recycled around the local economy, compared to £14 spent in multinationals, so you will be making your community more prosperous.

YOU WILL ALSO BE HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT

    4. Shopping locally means less packaging, less transportation and a much smaller carbon footprint.

    5. Shopping in our local town means less major development will be required on huge out of town shopping complexes.

YOU ARE HELPING YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

    6. Local retailers are your friends and neighbours, support them and they will support you. You will be enjoying a real sense of community and friendship when you shop locally.

    7. More local businesses donate to charities which include your local schools at more than twice the rate of national chains. Support them and you will be helping them make our towns great.

    8. More independent shops and services means more choice, more diversity, and a unique, vibrant and thriving community, which is a benefit to us all.

    YOU ARE HELPING YOURSELF

    9. Shopping locally will save you time! No travelling to the out of Town superstores.

10.Independent shops offer a high level of knowledge about their products and you can get advice and guidance to ensure you get the product that meets your needs; customer service levels are usually higher in your independent shops and services. So don't forget to get the message out!

    SHOP LOCAL

Kind Regards - have a good week.
