I have just received the sad news that Roger, former owner of the Cabin restaurant in the High Street, and more recently steward at the Royal Cinque Ports Yacht Club, passed away today following an operation for bowel cancer.
Roger was also a mainstay of the local CAMRA branch and of UKIP.
RIP Roger and sincere condolences to Pauline and brother Jim.

Just heard the same myself. This is awful news, Roger was an absolute gentleman, a true loveable eccentric and an amazing character. Dover has lost a great man today.
RIP Roger.

totally shocked saw him with his wife a couple of days ago waiting for a bus outside his house.
he waved across as usual, had no idea he had undergone surgery.

That is absolutely dreadful, quite horrible news. We are so very sorry, and very upset.
A terrific chap, just great. Suddenly the world has become much the poorer and darker.

Roger used to say he was the only person in Dover more pedantic than I. The deciding factor was that I carry a mobile whereas he always refused to buy what he referred to as a portable telephone.

What sad news, i was ionly chatting to him on a bus and in the street a few days ago.
always ready to share a few words.
a true gent.
when he ran the cabin we used to be regular visitors, also roger was a keen supporter of UKIP and we used to have many a debate about politics/mr prosser/the local situation/poor bus services at times/lack of vision by others for the pedestrian.
Roger has always been a real fighter for the pedestrian and a public transport,
he lived in my ward and told me he always voted for me against all his principles on the political front but he liked my style and getting things done.
Roger was always dressed to the 9's and a true gent whenever we met.
although on the political front we had many differences, he argued his corner without malice, and always had time to stop and chat.
Roger will be sadly missed around trhe community
R.IP. Roger i will miss our regular chats

What appalling news. I too was once a regular at The Cabin and knew Roger well from there and the Yacht Club.
Dover is a lot poorer today. RIP.

there will be many anecdotes about roger, let me be the first.
on the top deck of a bus from folkestone to dover a few years back and roger and his wife were sitting in one of the front seats, i was about half way back.
a young herbert and his giggly girl friend got on and sat in the other front seats and started to blast music from their new sound system.
as per usual the rest of us tutted and shook our heads, roger calmly put down his copy of the times leaned across and in a clear voice said "would you mind turning that down"?
i couldn't see the the young scrotes face but watched as both of his ears turned bright red before turning the thing off.

Truly sad news and my deepest sympathies go out to his wife and family. A huge loss for them and for Dover.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

So sadly unfortunate for Roger to pass over only weeks after Father. I'd known Roger my adult life and he really was a true gentleman. Life goes on but tweed will never be the same. RIP dear Roger
