We used regularly to relish the skate knobs, which are very tasty if you like skate, it is like oxtail, ie meat/fish around the tail. There is too much food wasted!

Correction - may also refer to skate cheeks, but I was always given to understand it was from the tail.

You are what you don't eat
The detective stood off from the scene
and pondered hard and long
he puzzled upon what might have been
the reason for the throng
before him eight young ladies sat
facing eight others likewise posed
each as dead as a doormat
each poisoned, he supposed
closer inspection swept this thought
away and clean out from his brain
of their set dinners they'd ate not
on fork or knife there was no stain
to the manager he now turned
and gave the third degree
how long since you first learned
of this before you called for me
these ladies must have met their fate
some time before you 'phoned
there's no warmth from food or plate
such delay can't be condoned
"Death by misadventure."
the Coroner declared
long non-use of denture
was the gossip aired
Let this stern lesson be
to all who go abroad to dine
the bill is not the only fee
nor indigestion the only fine.

OK you win!
Was previously owned by a well respected forumite at which time I understand the standards were excellent.
So now you know

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

Yes Lesley than would have been me, so glad you enjoyed it and thank you for the comment. To be completely honest I am only a cook who got many recipes from my wonderful mother-in-law who I really miss even though she died many years ago.

Just seen your review on Tripadvisor Jacqui. Thank you for your compliments, Kathryn and I did try to do our best, unfortunately we have no control any more. I would say you must have been unlucky as most of the reports I have heard since we left have been positive.

Like many other people my wife and I mourn the departure of Kathryn and Peter. That implies that Josef is not up to their standards. That is a fact. However, the establishment is still superior to many others in Dover. Our visits are generally lunchtimes, often on the dot of 12. Although "standard" fare (dare I mention a similarity to 3663) we have never faulted anything.
We used to go on Saturdays but prefer the less overwhelming clientele on Thursday or Friday.

I do not go to Blakes very often any more. For one thing I spend more of my weekends in Barham, taking me over towards Canterbury (my son has a a great time at weekends without me here!!!). I do sometimes pop in mid-week lunchtime but only about once a month or so. The food is no-where near as good as in Peter's time, quite ordinary at best. The burger I had there just after Peter left was was a horrible pressed meat and that did put me off.

Oh dear; our burgers were all made with our own fair hands from steak mince, minced smoked bacon and onion.

Did you complain to the manager Jacqui and what was his response? Once saw a sign in a Canterbury cafe saying, "If you like our service, tell your friends. If you don't, tell us".

I have printed off Jacqui's opening comments and her trip-advisor one and the next time we go to Blakes, I'll take it and let them know.
They must improve to save the (dining) business. We found it odd that the chilli con-carne and spag-bol has no sauce, just minced beef.

the thing that stands out for me is that most restaurants would be delighted to have a party of 17 to serve on a wednesday night in february.

I used to request pre-orders for parties of more than eight. Blakes' kitchen is not spacious and you would have to be Superman to get 16 starters or mains all out together, unless you had 5 kitchen crew.......which there isn't room for!!!

Just typed Blakes of Dover into Google with the most bizarre result.
