Removal of Spanish Prince (Blockship)
- 31 July 2010 09:4963217Whilst removing the statue, I was informed by the crane driver that they had salvaged one anchor off the wreck and it was in such good condition that they were able to remover the shackle bolt with no problem. They have offered it to Dover Harbour and we discussed the idea of it replacing the statue. We have left the site ready for Dover to place any monument you wish to put there but I think the Anchor would look great?

Of course DHB/DDC/DTC could hold a public competition for use of the plinth, Trafalgar Square style, but I dread to think what the PC brigade would install there.

There are several other paintings of Dover Harbour in 1918 by Sir John Lavery, who was a war artist, on the Imperial War Museum site which Scotchie has linked to. One of the monitor HMS Terror is of interest. Unfortunately one can only download the thumbnail images.
You can buy a print or an email download, which I intend to do for the Western Entrance painting, but are then forbidden by copyright to display it unless you pay the IWM a fortune. I don't know why museums do this as they are supposed to be the purveyors of information but, in this case, are not doing it themselves and not allowing anybody else to do it for them without charging them an extortionate fee for the privilege. - 7 August 2010 06:4164409Presumably Ed. when you say display it, you mean publicly display it, it's O.K. at home ?
I can't see why copies that have been paid for, can't be displayed for public consumption and enjoyment - a big shame that.
