This is the scene 90 years ago as H Cosmo Bonsor, the Chairman of the South Eastern Railway, makes his speech before unveiling the Memorial.
The commemoration takes place next Thursday at 10am.

That would have looked so impressive if it was on the seafront, such a shame it is now almost forgotten and unseen.

I have been to a couple of these ceremonies in the past in an official capacity, and yes its a shame that more people do not see this Memorial,as you say Jan it is very impressive.

I agree, as you say it is a shame it's not accessible to the general public who have no idea of the existence of such a thoughtful statue I think the two sculptures on both sides of the memorial are captivating.

The service at the former Marine Station is most beautiful and evocative.
This year it is on 8th November, at 9.30 for 10.00.

I think the organisation is done by someone from the railways, the monument is to Railway Workers that gave their lives during the wars.

My late husband worked for Brithish Rail for thirty years .His last appointment was as Area Manager for Kings Lynn down to
Ely.I think it is the Town Mayors that that invited.

Not many of us left now I am the young one of the group and I am 70years old ,it does not seem that long ago that I was serving but I went in as a young lad of 16 in 1958, and because I was not fit to keep going I was med/ discharge in 1964.But was still fit to carry on in the R.N X.S and was in the marine pens at the east docks in Dover. And was call out onto service for four days only when the U.S,A ,and the Soviet Union had a go at each other over Cuba, the police came to my house at about midnight and I had to join the others down at the pens was lock in there four days and nights, and when they took me I could not tell the wife why or where I was going. Could not say anythink to her when I returned, and I think she was not happy about that.

Yes Sue you are right we as Town Mayors are and were invited,I think you will find that it is all down to the Railway people to do the inviting, and they invite most of the veterans organisations as well as their own people.

The organisation is done by someone who gives up a lot of time to do it, for the love of it and to ensure its continuity. Kudos to him and everyone who helps make the ceremony superb. Perhaps those who would wish invitations in order to come on a formal basis might like to turn up this year informally, to show support and participate in the Remembrance of our Fallen.
Attendance would, incidentally, also give an opportunity to speak to an organiser about a formal presence next year, if that were desired. (Or I could pass on a message by email, if required)
There are a number of Dover people commemorated on the memorial, which is to the South Eastern and Chatham Railway employees. There is a corresponding list of names at Victoria Station. The key point is Remembrance, and it is, as I say, a lovely ceremony. All are welcomed.

If history could talk it would tell you that the mayor of Dover is the first person man or lady, that office has been round for 100s of years, and on a service like this one the mayor of Dover is the person to lead the ceremony of Remembrance to the fallen of our great town that played a very big part in both world wars, and not forgeting our fallen both men and women of the wars now carrying on and the ones in beween,The UK seems to always be at war and we still get the young coming up to take the roll on to fight them. And we must never forget what they have done and still doing..
