..there were some pictures of it posted on the forum quite recently.
It is the last flying example of the Avro Vulcan. The people who fly it have made the decision that 2013, is to be her last year in the air. Major modifications are needed to the front wing spars, and the jigs that Avro used to carry out this work got scrapped years ago.
Very sad that it certainly was a magnificent sight.

That is very sad - for both the team that have restored it and kept it in the air and for the viewing public

I think that could be done but at what cost, unless a company take it on without a payment.

What a shame. I witnessed a low pass from a Vulcan at an airshow at Biggin Hill many years ago and it was breathtaking, with the ground trembling and kids crying.
Keeping to the aeronautical theme, we were driving back from Deal yesterday when a Hercules flew past low and slow along the seafront just out to sea in the direction of Dover. It must have flown up and down the coast more than once because as we got back to Dover and were driving along the road behind the Castle, it was banking over the Eastern Entrance and returning in the direction of Deal.
I was unable to get any photos but here are some from a similar Hercules pass in 2008:

Apparently 2 Hercules doing some sightseeing yesterday
Re the Vulcan it was only every a 'short term' project. She is beyond the flying hours of any other Vulcan so they don't know quite what to look out for with regards wear and tear, there are no engines left and even simple things like tyres, no moulds etc exist so everything needed really is bespoke. Shame but inevitable

Been nice knowing you :)

I took these from St Martins Battery but they're not very good. I was going to ask if anyone knew what they are and what they were doing ..... now I know - thanks guys x

Grand pictures above there.
Here is another shot of the Vulcan bomber taken recently as it swept majestically across Dover Harbour.
Sad to hear it might be going out of service.
...
I also got a few shots of the Hercules below..didnt realise there were two of them but it/they were prowling up and down the coast for some time. Unfortunately I only had a little Samsung at my disposal at the time so not earth shattering pictures...but here we go..bet this rattled the bone china on Ed's ship (seen there in the foreground) as the plane did a dramatic sweep to the left just above it...

...!!lol
This final one taken through a rain stained window so a bit grainy, didnt have time to open it, but worth showing as you can see the mighty beast hedgehopping across the cliffs..Would have caused the casual picnicker a mild cardiac when it came up on them unexpected...whoosh!!.."gooh blimey..have you seen my teeth Ethel?"

Have often wondered if the visual design inspired the Concorde...

Yes Reg, it did. My father flew Valiants and Vulcans and also knew very well both Brian Trubshaw and Jock Cochrane, the two chief Concorde test pilots, who also flew vulcans. Delta wing jet experience was a requirement for the test programme. A Vulcan was also used as a flying test bed for the Olympus-593 engines as used in Concorde. A.V.Roe, the designer of the (Avro) Vulcan was also on the Concorde design team.

Thanks for that personal insight Peter-Cost should be irrelevant- an example of the Vulcan should be kept airworthy- as indeed the Concord fleet should still be operational.
Never give up...

I agree Richard - they have kept Spitfires and Hurricanes and other WW2 planes (and earlier ones) flying, so it will be wrong to just mothball it - as they did the Concord.

It is sad that they cannot afford to keep the one vulcan airborne any more. Lots of memories of them in Lincolnshire skies.

I, too, have fond memories of the Vulcan. One in particular has stayed with me, and that dates from the early 70s when Dad was stationed at RAF Valley in North Wales. We were out blackberrying one afternoon when a Vulcan flew right over us, having just taken off. I will never forget the noise! It was like nothing I'd ever experienced, my whole body shook - genuine wow factor.

Having spent several years in the ATC ``Air Training Corps``Squadron 2035.and had boyhood dreams
of being a fighter pilot and enjoyed flights in RAF aircraft `Ansons` and others but never, of-course,the
Vulcan Bomber but did fly in Concorde several times until my claustrophobia won,,returning to my
Shakespeare seat in 747`s descending the spiral stair to walk the length of the plane to my hearts
content the two iconic craft have been my favourites and do think they deserve preservation as long as possible.
Baumgartner was spinning and tumbling out of control in the stratosphere until he adopted the `delta`
shape,..... the delta design is a superb concept..........and saved his life...

It's a shame that we are going to lose this magnificent aircraft, I had the privilege to meet many if not all of the volunteers including the pilot at the Farnborough Airshow this year, at great bunch of hardworking people who give up so much of their time to keep this beautiful plane airworthy.
I also saw the two Hercules whilst showing friends around Broadstairs and Minnis Bay, unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me at the time.

June 2013:
Is it this afternoon the Vulcan comes to Folkestone and then flies on to Manston? About 3pm is it?
