The U.C.P (United cattle products) tripe shops. You are much too young for that one Jeanne. Maybe Tom remembers.

Who is this 'Tom' of whom you speak Alec?
...one mention of a wet-fish shop and it's weeping-windows doth not make me ye olde retail aficionado. U.C.P. are entirely new to me.
I remember toffee having a picture of an Highland cattle on the wrapper...the confusion lives on.

Maybe it was a northern thing Tom. Manchester was full of them, they sold nothing but tripe.

They always had tripe in the window of the CO-OP butchers, where McD's is now. I make no connection between tripe and burgers!
Next door was the CO-OP chemist where I used to buy my fixer. Developer I bought in Tyrells top of Ladywell.

Alec I've made the link LIVE for you.
Gawd yes I remember Radio Rentals. When we first came to the UK we were amazed to find whole chains of different shops where you rented out TV's. Back in de Emerald Isle we bought them on the never never. But it was a whole new phenomenon to see chains of shops just renting them out...wasnt DER another one? have I got that right? TV's obviously looking back used to cost relatively much much more than they do know..relative to wages that is etc.
Those shops all went out of business as times changed. One years marketing success story is another years flop. TV's came down in price and people didnt need to rent them out any more. We used to rent the things...I remember having a Baird.
'Do It ALL' wasnt too far back as I recall. The advert on TV went like this..working guys singing in the back of a van..
How do do it all do it
wont somebody tell
if only we knew it
how do it all do it
then we'd be doing it as well.
So there...dont say we dont bring ye culture on this website

Paul, you bought back a long forgotten memory. My husband's first job was as an auditor with Radio Rentals going round their various shops in London.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Our first TV was with Rediffusion, with the switch in the corner behind the curtain. Those were the days. With 3 channels we were happy. Now with Freeview and FreeSat we often can't find anything to watch (we do not like soaps or sport or reality).

In the 60's as a child I lived opposite the Dewdrop Inn, it was a few doors down from a bookies which was a few doors down from my dad's butchers. At the top of the street was a greengrocers and on the opposite corner a general grocery store. Another butchers (Co-op) opposite, a Co-op general store too, a men's hairdresser oooh sorry a barber, a newsagent as well which was opposite another small shop (Coopers?). Bottom of the street was a garage and bakers - a wet fish shop opposite, a sweet shop, another pub, a post office. Well thats what I can quickly remember. You could live your whole life and buy virtually all you need within 150 yards of my front door....those were the days and lets not forget the shoemender and all the other small sweet shops and pubs all around...

I remember my parents telling me they used to go dancing in a dancehall in Snargate Street - just by the big roundabout I think? Anyone remember this?
Reading this thread started me thinking about old ads on TV. I loved the ad for Heinz beans, there were several variations but the little lad came onj and said .......
" I sometimes think my mum prefers my dad as much as me
you ought to see the pile of beans she gives my dad for tea!
I need Heinz beans as much as him, in fact I need them more
cos my dads very very old and me? I'm only four! ........ (I'm six really but it didn't fit!)

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

Depends how far back you go. Don't forget that the DHB social club hall was roughly where the roundabout is now.

Terry,
From what my dad could remember it was off the York Street/Snargate Street roundabout - about where De Bradlei car park is I think. It would have been just before WW2 started I think.

That's just about where I've placed the x Jacqui. I remember going there when I was at school, we were forced to row a "whaler" round the harbour. Sadistic schoolteachers those days!
