According to the press at least.

Amongst those losing the facility is Folkestone Harbour. Reminds me of "Ghost Train"!
Perhaps they send tired staff there for a rest!

yet more misery for the long suffering commuters i order to boost the profits of the operating company.
i believe the best deals are not available via machines.
buying rail tickets becomes ever more complicated, people like to have face to face contact with a human who can tell them of the best deals.

How long before the trains are driven by Robots! there is just no quality of service anymore just a quest to reduce costs and maximise proftits , where will it end?

I would love to see the comparative costs of employing staff at these stations and the cost of repairing damage caused by vandalism, unpaid fares and missed fares as people choose to travel by car rather than train as it is becoming such an unfriendly experience.

once again its the railways doing themselves an injustice
they removed ticket barrier staff to have open stations thus passengers arrive at the station having no idea where to go, who to talk to and best way to travel.
british rail as it was some 15 years was losing million of unpaid fares when the barrier staff were removed and continue to do so.
it also does little for customer confidence, and makes stations very unfriendly places to visit.

hi howard thanks for that
quite a number in our area,
many serving commuters whos bread and butter relies on the tickert office for information etc.
you would think that lessons would have been learnt over the millions lost by poor manaement when ticket barriers were removed,
now we will see even more stations totally unstaffed.
hardly falls in line with attempts to ge people out of the car and into the trains.

What happens to those who need advice as to the kind of ticket they want.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

they will be told to visit the website which is even more confusing.
we must bear in mind that taxpayers money goes to the train operating companies yet they can do whatever they like.
I went to get a train to London from Kearsney a few weeks ago, and was going about 5am. With no staff there at that time there was a machine on the platform telling me the fair (about £52) and to insert the money for a ticket. It only took coins and i didnt have £52 in change on me

Amongst those losing the facility is Folkestone Harbour I don't think Folkestone Harbour has sold a ticket in the last 10 years

Totally, jaw-clangingly outrageous if this appalling plan goes ahead - large-scale ticket office closures at railway stations - including on our manor Deal, Walmer, Sandwich, Folkestone West, Aylesham and Kearsney among literally hundreds of others on the McNulty Report hitlist.
Great timing for Deal and Sandwich too - on the very day the two towns run their inaugural high-speed train services to St Pancras. How utterly spiffing. Brilliant. Visionary.
One hopes that Charlie Elphicke and Laura Sandys, on hand yesterday to bask in some of the (deserved) adulation for getting these services up and running, now fight vigorously to consign to the dustbin this typically cack-handed, stroke-of-a-pen, faceless-mandarin nonsense, with the heavy stench of that bastard Beeching about it.
Come on and speak up against this now, Charlie, Laura, Damian Collins, etc. Or cue the alternative: massive inconvenience, danger, vandalism, decline, plus many other safety and security issues, and a major negative impact on passengers' (and your constituents') travel experience and quality of life. And then when it's all fallen apart, the stations will fall foul of the accountants' bottom line, and then they will close. Lovely.
Regards all,
Andy

This can only lead to a rise in the cost of tickets, to cover the extra amount of lost fares. While it is true that many of the stations on the list have not sold a ticket for years, the presence of even a part time ticket seller does allow some confidence. Deserted stations will quickly become large open toilets and stopping points for those avoiding paying any fares.
There is also the fact that the on-board ticket inspectors will be expected to carry more cash, in taken fares and a float of change, as well as having to deal with a lot more card transactions. At the same time, will there be extra security for the ticket inspectors? It will soon be obvious that they are carrying money and that makes them a target.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Sounds like common sense arguments from Andy and Chris. I can understand the need for reducing costs, but this would be the start of a downward spiral and a false economy.
