21:4481354from january 2011 fares in kent will rise on average by 7.8%.
sounds like a kick in the teeth or the dangly bits to people that have no choice but to use the train to get to work.
rail companies point out that they have 2 sources of income, subsidies and fares.
subsidies have been reduced by the last administration and the new one.
no doubt they will both continue to decry the use of the car.

21:4681357Lovely - doubt my employer will pick that up in my pay rise (excuse while I roll around laughing like a loon)

13:5681432The problem this govt has is that on the one hand it wants to cut the subsidies to private rail companies, to make up this shortfall the rail companies put up rail fares way above inflation.
Of course the constant hike in rail fares will just turn even more people away from the trains
Brian
sad ou took a selfish outlook on rail fare increases

17:0281461seems that commuters will take the brunt of the increases, some seasons tickets between kent and london will rise by over 12 %.

20:2681508Brian that will be a big NO
If I look at the role I do I would struggle to get more than 66% of what I get working in the City for a similar role locally.
For some, tower crane operators for example, you go where the work is and most of that is in London

21:2181511the same people shackled with the 12% hike will also be paying extra v.a.t. with very little likelihood of a pay rise to compensate.
commuters are an easy target, those that use the trains now and then can switch to national express if need be.

08:4181570If you're not a commuter and can book in advance, tickets are still cheap, but you have to look for them and booking online also helps.

08:4581572ross,if you like paying lots of money to travel to work, but finding there is only standing room is it worth the hassle.seeing that most train services are third world only.

08:5281576Much of the problems with standing-room only is the lack of carriages, not the quality of them.

12:5981618the government has announced that £8 billion will be invested in the railways, 2000 new carriages are included in this.
hopefully we see some of these in our neck of the woods.

15:1881623The problem also is the bottleneck into the main london stations, you can only get so many trains on the line.
but the hike in fares will turn people of travelling on trains

19:3481677Brian no problems - I use the High Speed services and always get a seat in both directions, as well as saving 40 minutes each way on my journey time - frankly worth the premium
