09:3978019I hear this mornming that the EU is forcing us to give prisoners the vote as it is against their human rights not to have the vote.
What about the human rights of people they have violated ? Do these prisoners think about losing their vote when they rape, murder, assault, rob, mug, burgle their victimes ? of course not.
Isn't this another reason to get out of the EU ?

09:4678020Well, any do gooder MPs can now offer early release dates in their election campaigns, knowing they`ll get extra votes from the prisoner`s, not to mention family and freind`s. SICK!!
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

09:5078021This reform goes nowhere near far enough!
With over 80.000 prisoners incarcerated as I write surely they deserve not only the vote but their own constituency?

09:5378022This is wrong. One correction though Roger. The European Convention on Human Rights is nothing to do with the EU.

10:2078026Sorry chaps - I fail to see how you can lump all prisoners together. There are countless reasons for being in prison - yes there are some horrendous bastards who should stay there for the rest of their natural, but there are also some vulnerable people, some sick people, some inoffensive but unlucky people, some there-but-for-the-grace-of-god-go-I people. Not do-gooding rhetoric, simple facts.

10:3878029A good article. It is wise to acknowledge the variables and leave room for judgement calls - as I said, there are multitudes of reasons for imprisonment.

10:5278034the last government refused to implement the ruling made in 2004, the problem is that it could cost the taxpayer a few hundred million pounds in legal costs to continue fighting against the decision.

11:1278041apparently lifers and murders would be exempt from voting, that just leaves voting for minor offences.

12:5178055brian is right here, murderers and other lifers would not have the vote.
i wonder how many will actually exercise their right, i cannot picture a bunch of muggers, pimps and drug dealers earnestly discussing the dichotomy between keynesian economics and the big society.

13:1178061And yet I was only having a chat the other day with a (former) drug dealer who knew much more than I about Adam Smith.........
