a very pleasant walk along the pier today.
nothing much seemed to be happening with these craft, looked like the a.g.m of the marie celeste appreciation society.
a regular visitor here the "saga ruby".
hardly any wind on the sea a great day for enjoying leisurely maritime pursuits.

the sign outside said it was martin but i did not venture to the end.
The Cafe at the end of the pier is very rarely open....and certainly never before 10 am.....
the Information Box before you reach the pier....is NEVER open........
Is that only to sell tickets for a boat trip around the harbour
Sorry, I should add......Wonderful photos.........Thank heavens this is all a gift of nature to us.....and cannot be spoilt or ruined by the powers that rule.........................

thanks charlie, i never bother going to the end of the pier for the reason you speak of,
the kiosk is a waste of space the tinted windows are a definite turn off, funnily enough there was someone in there when i went past today.
just a silhouette though.
What a wasted opportunity that cafe is - a bit of publicity and some decent hours it could be lovely!
PS - great pics, as usual, Howard.
There are many wasted opportunities.......
In fact, you could start a competition.......

always been a problem that cafe.
i remember posh barry saying that he and colette turned up on a winter weekend morning and excellent hot chocolate.
my experience has been a spoonful of bulk purchase coffee powder in hot water when it has been open.
yes it is a wasted opportunity, walkers and anglers are there all year round.

The information office is open most days from 10.00hrs the lady working there is very good,if she is not in there ,then she is walking up and down with her leaflets, she will give out and tell you what you need to know about what is going on in Dover and times and where, also she has bus times and train times, and like most she does not get paid for her time.

Yorkshire Born And Yorkshire Bred
Unfortunately...it is a collective lease from the Harbour Board...owned by the same Riverside Catering Compay..... ....which incorporates....
the Kiosks on the beach........the cruise terminal cafe...when the cruises are in.......etc.............
all run on a very ad hoc basis..almost when the weather is good, we will open..and with minimum staff.........etc...etc.......................
it was much better years ago when individuals ran them and had to earn a decent living by working at it....
Vic Matcham....
The one lady is only there 3 times a week...she gives out leaflets regarding the boat trips and tours along the sea front...and is therefore not in the information box...etc. etc.....
As it is a commercial operation....
ie...selling tickets for the boat trip around the Harbour...and excusions to Canterbury/Leeds Castle etc she does, certainly, get paid.........................

charlie
it does seem to be a commercial operation, but i think that volunteers man the information kiosk.
on the other issue i would prefer the eating and drinking places to be run independently than by a large company.

What a pity we couldn't have had another cafe like the one that was ruined in the hurricane. We used to walk out there nearly every day for a drink and a snack when my boys were little. They loved to sit up and watch the hovercraft etc coming and going and being higher up there was a fantastic view. You can't see anything from the new cafe. If we go out there now we usually take our own food and drink and sit outside. Such a shame though.
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

When I went past the Kiosk on Thursday, it was open and a visitor (?) was making inquiries.
I'm sure Richard must be concentrating on his own business now as he has been hacked off by so many people when trying to help develop tourism here.
I know he had painted some Napoleonic-period soldiers on the facing wall of the Grand Shaft without permission - but it IS a Napoleonic-period structure and it did create interest and awareness of the Shaft.
It would be very good if people could rely on the cafe (at the end of the pier) being open every day, they would certainly get much more business.
