I see that Jeremy Clarkson has been lambasted for calling Gordon Brown a one-eyed Scottish idiot - not by the Labour Party as a political insult, nor Scotland due to racism, but by the RNIB as it is felt to be an insult to blind people.
Isn't this over-sensitivity getting silly and losing value to real insults and real racism ?

Keith - I don't think I've missed the point at all.
Every one at some point will be insulted about something - it seems that people look for things to feel insulted about, for a range of reasons, the vast majority of which will be totally unintentionally made.

spot on dave, just a part of life.
a lot of times it is down to taking offence by proxy.
for a long while we were told that muslims were offended by christmas decorations, hot cross buns and all sorts of things, each time the muslim community leaders said that they were not offended at all.
jeremy clarkson's turn today, doubt if gordon brown turned a hair, barry calls him a lot worse.
if we clubbed our quids together we could get barry's french house as well.

It's stories like this Howard that are real winners for the Daily Mail. It allows all the the real offense to be clubbed in with the "It's PC gone mad" label.

Oh there you go! But as it turns out nothing came of it and the council said their representative was wrong. We moan about dragging this thread out about people in the public eye. The Daily Mail drag a story out of something that didn't really have any agenda other than to remind people how they shouldnt have to worrying about others, because if you think it then everyone else should, we're British don't you know.

Howard - everything matters, but nothing matters frightfully. the words we use matter as they impact on everything else.
Paul - "we old geezers" who remain unoffended are probably old white geezers who didn't grow up being called golliwogs and being hit for it.
There IS a limit to offence!! Jeremy Clarkson shouldn't have to apologise: his entire raison d'etre is to offend, but to do it with charm and humour, which he manages, and it de-fuses a lot of the venom.
We should take it all seriously, but not become fanatical; we should respect others viewpoints without becoming impotent; we should value our culture without de-valuing others.
Chris P -

I like what you post!!!

The link doesn't work Ross, but you can find it by going on to that web-site.
I certainly don't think we live in a better Britain now than 30 years ago, certainly not even ten years ago - look around you, every aspect of our lives have changed - for the worse, much worse.

Dont forget the 'liar' bit, Paul...
Yes, Jeremy Clarkeson was quite careful to apologise about critisising Brown's appearance. Some of the press did not pick up on that though.
Not sure what he apologised for though...
Brown is Scottish
He is one eyed
He is unquestionably an idiot
and there is plenty of evidence of his lies.
I found it laughable because Brown was attacked and referred to as Scottish and one eyed, that some created an artificial fuss suggesting Clarkeson said that it means all disabled people or Scots are lying idiots! Amazing, but I do understand how disabled people and Scots might be upset at being associated, even very remotely, to Brown. I feel that same way about being Brown merely being a fellow member of the human race
I do like Clarkeson, he is a great antidote to supine political correctness. One of the few bright spots on the BBC!

He won't last long then Barry.
That somewhat overweight female comedian (??) Jo Brand has been insulting Margaret Thatcher, but no one at the BBC seems to mind.

All politicians are fair game; it goes with the territory
Having said that ad hominem insults are missing the mark and unacceptable, as it is the performance of their duties and their public behaviour that is fair game
