Very frustrating, someone in authority locally must have known about this a while back.
Makes us all look rather couldn't care less if just a handful of people are there to meet it.

Yet again something of real meaning for a lot of people goes un mentioned. I don't normally air my views but when you compare what Folkestone have done for the commemoration compared with Dover I am disgusted. Blimey do all these people who fought, suffered and died to give us our freedom mean nothing to this town. I for one will never be able to thank them enough. My late grandfather being one of them. We owe them so much. To the authorities of Dover - be ashamed. I'm sure if people knew there would have been a good turn out. Yet again too late.

I believe the vast majority left our country via Folkestone David, hence the Avenue of remembrance is more appropriate there.
Anyway grateful thanks to Brian who went down there at short notice and got these photos.

As soon as I read it on here, I grabbed my camera and went down there.
They weren't going to have a service down at the War Memorial, but at a safe lock-up that was owned by the sea or army cadets. I understand the DTC said to them about having a service there and so that's what they did - all last minute I understand.
It was a lovely service (the weather was beautiful, a big change from this morning), apart from the mike didn't work very well, so we couldn't hear the Minister, or the youngsters who read out various passages.
The trailer with all the poppies on was beautiful and the Town Council gave one to be put on, along with some others, but we couldn't hear who they were from.
A really old truck brought/pulled the poppies down and apparantly it broke down a few times, but considering its age, did a good job.
I'll see if I can down-load some photos (Colette showed me how to, but that was a long time ago.

That I appreciate but did Dover not pay a big part and suffered in both wars. This no care attitude of Dover just goes on.....

I am well aware of that. You miss my point. It just seems that important significant occasions go unmentioned.

Many thanks for those Roger, sorry to sound downbeat but clearly you didn't know about this previously so presumably DDC were not aware but your photos show the Mayor and former Mayor were aware and present.
Why the big secret from our lords and masters, did they think the great unwashed of Dover would devalue the occasion with their presence?

Well, that worked, my memory must be better than I thought.
I hope you like the photos.
Yes I am sorry there wasn't more notice too, but I don't think DTC were to blame.
85 poppy wreaths (plus those laid this evening) representing the various regiments; it was really humbling to be there, so pleased I went.
100 years ago - a long time indeed. There was an elderly Standard-Bearer who was quite slight in his build and he was 94; a good old soldier.

No, I didn't know about it Howard, not until I read it on here about 5.30pm. I doubt if DDC knew either. Apparantly there wasn't even going to be a ceremony, but when the decision was made to have one, I have no idea.
Many things go on in Dover that we only find out about afterwards - sadly. I know some people who, if they had known, would have loved to have been there.

I don't believe DDC knew about it, otherwise people would have responded & turned out to show their respect. Well done DTC for re-acting fittingly to the occasion.

Well said Paul.
There wasn't even going to be a ceremony at first, but I'm sure that much more could have been made of this, if it had been widened out. I believe it was all part of the Western Front Association, in connection with the local Sea Cadets; maybe they wanted to keep it simple.

Or did not realise the people of Dover would actually like to show their support for this historic event which was briefly mentioned on the local BBC news this morning.
