Hilary French, the president of the Girls' School Association, will tomorrow say that children at state schools should be taught manners, encouraged to speak in coherent sentences, learn foreign languages and develop team skills from the age of seven if they are to get on top and improve their social mobility. She will also warn that the Government's narrow focus on exam performance in state schools is perpetuating the dominance of British society by the privately educated.

Well Roger, that be nice if they would implement that in schools.
I support the idea. Sadly not everyone will agree. This seems common practise in Australia. They are doing very well.
But thinking a bit further, private schools will be against this surely.

nothing that private schools would or could do to stop it heike, ms french is clearly correct in saying that the current system is aimed at getting pupils to pass exams rather than anything else.
the way things are going i am expecting universities to run degree courses in txtspk.

Who ever does this will surely give those kids a better start; it used to be common practice many years ago, but then parents were different too.

Good manners and speaking in coherent sentences are the sort of thing that should be taught automatically by ALL schools from day one regardless of whether they are state or private.
I would also add respect for other people and property which seems to be lacking by so many, learning is not just about the three Rs.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

My feeling is that the problem is more down to parents than schools.

Agreed Peter but when the parents do not instill manners etc the school should, when I was at school we were taught respect by example not as a lesson. Out of interest do children still have to stand up when any adult enters the room we had to.

I agree with Jan, both parents and schools should emphasise good manners and good english language.
