The police were out in force this afternoon at 3 o'clock. They were surrounding one of the well known winos, the one on crutches, who was drinking what looked like a can of strong brew. Did it need four of them and a police car though.?

No - but current training and H&S/risk assessments means they need to go mob handed; partly because they cannot deal with these situations on their own (risk of being sued, inappropriate training etc.) and partly because they are terrified of an officer getting "injured" and the force having them on "sick leave" for ages.

In some respects I agree Ian - though we equally need to ensure that the police do not take the law into their own hands and step beyond what is reasonable for the situation, as they often did in the old days ultimately to their own detriment in terms of public confidence in the police.

Here is a little piece of info from the Police...not related to the above event as mentioned by Alec but another close by a day or two earlier...
A 22-year-old Dover man was issued with an £80 fine and fixed penalty notice after police were called to the Dover Discovery Centre on Saturday (21 January 2012).
It was reported at midday that the man was shouting and swearing at staff in the centre and had pushed over a shelving unit as he left the building.
Town centre police officers attended and with the help of CCTV operators, traced the man and he was issued with the fine.
******************
Just to add my own small note. In the old days if a policeman told you to move along you generally did what you were told. There was still a general awareness of what was right and wrong. Nowadays everyone thinks they are right all the time. There isnt the same deference towards the Police...people, usually drunk, argue the toss right or wrong, and as we have seen recently are even attacking Police..we have seen knifings of Police officers, beating ups, people driving cars directly at them and so on. The point Im making is..that its not the old days any longer...if only! The Police need to go in numbers where possible especially if there is any hint of drunkeness.

there always seems to be undesirables hanging round the entrance to the library nowadays.
you get the odd few in there too.

I've seen library staff ask teenagers to leave the Discovery Centre on various occassions, the verbal abuse they put up with is appalling.

the saturday before last i witnessed some teenagers being asked to leave.
they then had an altercation amongst themselves outside.

this was taken after they were thrown out, there seemed to be an argument over a carton of cigarettes.

We had to shout at a group in the library last week as they were running around using it as a 'playground'

Been nice knowing you :)
What other facilities are there is Dover that would attract young people with time on their hands? This is asked in curiosity, not trying to make a point.....just in case anyone thought I was being "smart"!!

Ok Sue, imagine you are 15 , your parents cant keep you hand outs for going out
so.. you are not going to be able to afford to go the Cinema (if they are showing something you havent already seen )
the all the other things you have mentioned are all related to sports.. and again.. cost money and involve equipment...
so.. forgive me if i am wrong, but what else can they do thats FREE????

We didn't get hand outs very often, cycling was a good pastime.

there will always be children that join anything going and others that mope around.
not everything costs money - cycling as mentioned above, swimming in the sea in summer.
i suppose they get classed as sports but many people with no sporting inclination enjoy those two activities.

Well said Jenni.
With regards to cycling there was not as much traffic when we or even our children were in their teens, that is why so many cyclists ride on the pavement.
When I was in my late teens we used the coffee shops that were abundant as well as the fashion.

Howard is right that some kids will find something they enjoy doing, others don't enjoy doing anything.
Look at the talent show we've just had on at the Town Hall, lots of hard-working young 'uns; DODS and the Black-Fish Academy also work for and with young people.
