14:0590392the castle pub has applied for a licence for pole dancing to take place.
they have already erected a pole in the pub.
police have expressed their concerns, i cannot see it being a great success.

14:2190393Nothing wrong with catering for Eastern European minorities.
Obviously having the desired effect, judging from the second line.

14:5690395Very amusing Ed....
Howard - I think we will have to do an inspection, just a fact finding operation, in the line of duty that we can report back to the forum on.....
In my experience (I had some involvement in licencing when on DDC though the council role was different to what it is now) the police tend to take the easy way out with licencing and to object as a default position claiming 'concerns', preferring an easy life.

15:3490398I seem to recall that the Britannia tried it with the landlady performing, didn't succeed then and I doubt if it will now once the novelty value has worn off. Although in the case of the Britannia the pole needed to be quite substantial, as was the landlady!

15:5490401i was surprised that the police objected to this one, i cannot see what the problem is.
like terry i think it will have novelty value, no long term success.

16:2290413What some people will do to get in the papers is scarey.
I always thought pole dancing was to be found in the less salubrious establishments that catered more for the dirty old men.

16:3290414There seems to be a lot of it about Jan, every time the hero on TV goes into some drinking establishment there's a girl wriggling about on a pole and of course in a hugely provocative manner. Its almost as if everyone is doing it!
But its a funny old world innit...on one hand you have the nation in uproar over a few careless female innuendo related remarks, and on the other hand you have females cascading naked all over yer warm beer. Is it okay i wonder to make innuendoes with regard to these pole dancers.. or...??
its a bewildering time for the poor simple male.

16:5190417Yes a very bewildering time, obviously OK to be blatant but no inuendo or sexual remarks allowed.

16:5390418Who knows, with the increased interest in burlesque maybe an amateur night would go down a storm.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

16:5990421Well the failure at the Britannia may well be down to the dancer herself.
We will just have to examine the evidence in great detail on this new venue to judge whether its a success or not. At the end of the day we should welcome a choice of venue and different form of entertainment.
....Some would prefer those big tv screens showing 22 grown men playing kiddy games.
....Others prefer loud ear-splitting music that prevent you from enduring the requirements of conversation.
....Some places, like those I prefer, actually encourage its patrons to chat over a good quality pint of beer.
....Soon maybe we have another alternative, a hopefully attractive lady dispaying her skills with a pole, I just wonder if the beer there is any good and might have to find out?
So on the basis of choice being a good thing we should welcome this development. I, though, do not expect to change my personal preference but would be duty bound to go on a fact finding mission to see what the fuss is all about.

18:2090425I was rather hoping for Maypole dancing in the style of The Wicker Man with Morris Men when I saw the title. Oh well, how disappointing to find out it will be young ladies cavorting around.
I suppose pubs are so desperate for trade these days they have to push the boat out further to capture markets. There used to be only a couple of pubs that used have large groups play, i.e. the Louis and The Archer but now so many pubs are in on the act with at least a Kareoke or a two piece or more every Saturday. But people and money will only stretch so far...it's so disheartening to see a band play their heart out to a near empty pub but it happens all the time.
Every landlord has to try something, and I suppose pole dancing will capture some form of market. There can't be many landlords who can afford to rest on their laurels any more when there is bugger-all money about.

18:4490434I don't know what pole-dancing is, but the Basques in northern Spain are traditionally good at performing on very high stilts.
The Dutch have clog-dancing, which excludes the need of drums.
May-pole dancing is an English characteristic.

i can assure you that the pole dancing proposed for the "castle" pub is totally different from that perfected by the basques.

19:4990451Amateur night - there's a thought. If they put up a girder instead of a pole I might be tempted, otherwise I am afraid the house would quite literally come down...........

20:1390463presumptive of you all to assume the dancers will exclusively be
a) women
b) attractive
Frankly I fail to see the attraction
Also i would have thought the carpet in the Castle is sticky enough already....
