I think they recognised the symptoms but ruled it out because of his age. His wife was saying in the interview that a stroke was suggested but they said he was too young to have it. This is a myth that needs to be dispelled and not all doctors are recognising. Luckily for him the stroke was not severe otherwise he would almost certainly be dead or permanently disabled.
There was another article in the news last week about another man who has been left in 'locked-in syndrome' since suffering a stroke aged 50 in 2005, and he is seeking permission to be allowed to die. Very sad.
Stroke is actually the leading cause of adult disability in this country.
