I see that the cost of policing the Holy Father's four day visit has risen to £12 million.
The main event would appear to be a mega-Mass in Crofton Park where he will beatify Cardinal Newman in front of 80,000 faithful.
Since this works out at £150 a head surely it would be better to get them all a return flight with Ryan Air to Rome (£16.99 + taxes each way).
WWJD? Just trying to be helpful.

It would appear that the Catholic church are coughing up approx £9 million towards the cost but as the Pope is Head of State on a State visit then Cameron has agreed to underwrite another £12 million. Most of it will go in salaries, food and transport and therefore may provide some mini stimulus to the economy of the cities he intends to visit.

Marek,
Rubbish, Catholics are well known to be the sort of people who bring sandwiches!
As for Head of State, in the words of the much maligned Joseph Stalin , "How many divisions does the Pope have?"

bobis on one of his wind ups, the pontiff will be a value added attraction, like the evangelist billy graham years ago, adds to the economy overall.
Marek,
4.2 million Catholics in UK in last census. That's only £2 a head!
Admittedly the Royal Family are cheaper at 61p/head of UK population, but since Her Majesty has offered me absolutely nothing in the way of eternal life (so far) so I think you have got a bit of a bargain there!

Bob, maybe her majesty can`t offer you eternal life, but at least she`s honest.

I am not sure I can go along with that Colin! At the risk of hoisting myself creakily onto my soapbox again, someone who can rake in as much dosh as the royal family and own as much property without blinking at the homeless but think it is all made ok by a few photoshoots with the feeble does not rank as honest or decent in my humble estimation.

Sorry Bern, I wasn`t looking on that side, I was refering to the pope offering eternal life which Bob mention`s above. Apart from that, I don`t know much about the royal family, but I`ll take your word for it.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.
Would I give up part of my home for a wretched ne'er do well, on drugs, on benefits and dragging a vicious dog around street corners begging for more money? Erm.............................. NO! So why expect Bess of Buck House to do what I, and millions of others, won't do? Sorry, this just sounds more like typical socialist, bring everyone down to the lowest level, thinking.
As for 4.2 million Catholics, well, if they were the ONLY ones paying, no problem, but all of us, no matter what religion have to cough up. So, while "Herr White One" gorges himself on our hospitality and preaches wherever he can get an audience, don't try and kid us he is a head of state. NO head of state visits another country and holds religious rallies. Let's at least recognise him for what he is, a sect leader, not a state leader.
So Sid, every homeless person is a drug-addled benefits scrounger who probably likes drinking blood and howling at the moon? Get a grip and look around. I can tell you about the 14 year old girl sleeping (I use the term loosely because she spent most of the time fending off pimps and drug pushers and the occasional rapist and kiddie-fiddler) in doorways and on benches (until moved on by the police) because it was preferable to spending one more night in her fathers house while he "did that" to her again. The guy who rapidly and through no fault, initially, of his own lost his job, then his house, then his family and took some solace in drink (and you know it helps sometimes, chaps) and found himself caring so little about himself and his rotten life that he just stayed sat where he was (and no, he didn't claim any benefits - what was the point, he was worthless and useless, and no value, according to him) until I removed his boots for him and discovered he had trench foot because he hadn't taken them off in 2 years.
Try to think around stuff and ignore your inner Littlejohn - sometimes people are rotten, sometimes they are not - usually they are a mixture. Seeing all homeless as the same is like saying all Coppers are bad...............

I have just Googled the Popes visit and found the following.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jul/05/popes-uk-visit-cost-12m
I am sure there are better ways to spend such a vast ammount of money, especially as along with a large number of the population I have no interest in relgion.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

3 million does not sound much to shell out for a state visit, i bet they normally cost a lot more than that.
i welcome the pontiff and will enquire with him how my application for sainthood status is going.
i have promised him that i will turn up at one of his churches every sunday, give up something useless at lent and put a few bob in the collection box.
only if i get a written guarantee from him though.
You might ask him what he is doing to stop child molestation by Catholic priests. You might ask him how the Catholic Church feels about sitting on vast sums of money and spending vast sums of money on Popish holidays, sorry, visits while huge numbers of catholic beleivers live their lives in squalor and abject poverty.
You might ask him to go home soonest.

Bern, I agree with you that we need to help people who are outcast, and as for the Monarchy, I recognise the Celestial, which excludes both pope and ...
