  The EU Commission (i.e. the civil service) displays the tendencies of all civil servants everywhere; the they know best attitude, the centralisation of power, the creeping bureaucracy, the plethora of pointless rules/regulations/laws all to justify their existence. Certain European politicians play ball with this as they are either French and generally ignore the stuff they do not like, are French/German/Spanish and have lined up a cosy position as a senior commissioner, or see it as the lesser of 2 evils and a way to avoid the decentralising desires of many of the new entrants or a way to put particularly the UK in its place. These members of the "political elite" really do fear the UK taking a more effective role in the EU and are happy to drive wedges between Labour and Conservative and must have been well chuffed when the Tories split from the Centre Right coalition.
