The trouble is that a lot of religious people regard an anti-religious opinion as persecution. In my opinion I think all religions suck. Every single one of them. But to someone like Alex and many other believers, my opinion, which is aimed at institutional bodies and philosophical ideas, would be seen as insulting, persecution, mind vomit, or whatever. Nothing man-made should be beyond criticism, satire, ridicule, or confrontation. Politics is forever being challenged and confronted by oppositions and alternative ideals, which is the right thing to do, because all politics is man-made and massively imperfect. We only reach any semblance of truth through such confrontational challenges and corrections. Similarly with science, it is forever revising its thinking, it often faces massive ridicule, even sheer insults, until such notions may be proven and become acceptable as facts.
The problem lies in the fact that no religious person believes that their belief system is man-made, for if it was then it would actually be worthless without its divine touch. But historical records show just how man made all religion is: Ever wondered if Zeus was just a myth or a real god to anyone? What about the Sun God Aten? Or the Mayan Kukulcan? Or Mars, the God of War? Or Dionysus? Of course, to the modern Christian this is just a meaningless list of heathen gods and fake idols, but to history, these names represent a particular truth to those who believed in them - just like modern day Jesus, God, Allah, or take-your-pick whoever else. How many centuries will it be until new gods emerge, sending the current gods to the pages of history book curios?
I don't have a problem with people who hold a belief, which may surprise you. What bothers me, and indeed makes me hostile towards religion, is how it is sold to the masses as an absolute truth that cannot be challenged or questioned. To me this is massively insulting to the spirit of human endeavour, it crushes progressive thinking, and of course it provides a powerful tool kit for the religious establishment to control the thoughts and behaviours of the followers. Don't be offended by this, but just to illustrate with an example, the Catholic church (note I am speaking of the "system") propagates the idea that unmarried sex, or sex for the sake of pleasure (which would involve condoms) is a sin and is wrong. WHY? Who but a gang of guilt-ridden puritans would even suggest such a thing? Puritanism is just the fear that someone is enjoying themselves and makes crimes of natural acts. Would a God give us the ability to enjoy sex so much if he didn't want us to actually use that ability? It defies all logic.
Anyway, that's my civilized twopenny worth on the subject. More dinosaur pics soon folks!
