What Barry is saying Keith, is that L and R have been redefined, the traditional divides are gone and the big gulf now is between those who believe government is the solution and those who think it's the problem.

Keith - That is a silly and senseless dig at Peter who was merely clarifying what I was saying.
The fact is there are shades of how big/small government should be in both sides of the spectrum. But ultimately that is correct the big left/right divide is between those who place their faith in government and those of us who do not.
There are other characteristics as well by way of attitudes.
The left thinking types, generally, tend to be more prone to trendy ideas on child rearing and teaching, more prone to a belief in softer sentencing for criminals. We on the right tend to be more in favour of discipline in schools and the home, tougher exams and some real punishment for criminals. Yes, there are exceptions to the rule but overall you find such differentiations.

barryw
lets take your issues one at a time;
a;i don't think you will find many posters wanting top heavy govts
b; not sure what is meant by trendy teaching, at the end of the day it should be
about how best to get children involved/learning the 3 r's? but at the same time
the whole of society needs to change to allow this to happen
c; im unaware of posters wanting weaker sentences for guilty criminals, but having
said that, the prisons are full to bursting, so those convicted where do they go?
d; i have no problem with disipline in the schools, although come from a
background of seeing teacher abuse, and over doing the power thing
thus the reason where we reached where we are today.
e; prison should be a place to fear(unlike today) so share your view there
so all in all that disputes a lot of this left/right stuff

Keith - you have been a supporter of what you call 'top heavy government' and have always supported big government solutions. We see this divide on this forum daily.

# 22.....clairvoyant...spokesperson.....closet...
# 24....Silly simplistic cliche analogue.....difference is much deeper....
but to keep it simple `Bankers and elite greedy pigs are not left wing.......

One thing for sure, you, Reg - demonstrate time and time again the deep bigotry of the left as representing one of their characteristics. Always able to cheapen a debate and never able to deepen one.

Osborne should just stick to doing his job.....so says former Chancellor of the
Exchequer Lord Lawson. It is thought he is juggling too many roles after his Budget in
March.
The I.M.F.have told Osborne he should revise his plan.
The deficit is £ 6.8 billion higher than the same point in 2011 because the government
is borrowing about the same amount to fund it`s spending
Osborne has been involved in cross-government stategy ( and propaganda ) for two
years and it`s only just failing to impress the public and the tories are restless and
starting to doubt him following the Budget fiasco.
Our AAA status is under the spotlight and although Cameron relies on Osborne rather
a lot it would be difficult to ignore such an embarrassing developement of it was
downgraded.
All this comes at a sensitive time for Osborne.
