Howard - your memory is faulty there a bit. The MOD did plan to scrap HMS Endurance, the South Atlantic patrol ship, but that had little firepower anyway. The big problem was Labour's scrapping of HMS Ark Royal leaving us without conventional carrier airpower. There were some rather short-sighted plans as well to reposition the Navy more to the North Atlantic corridor as well reducing its blue water capacity. But at no time did they decide to stop defending the Falklands, there was no suggestions that the Royal Marine presence would be withdrawn.
After the Falklands War, far from throwing troops on the scrapheap the forces were strengthened. Defence spending actually increased at 3% above inflation for 5 years.
The conflict was sparked entirely because of the Argentine military dictatorship was in trouble and needed a distraction in an attempt to stay in power. It was nothing to do with UK Defence plans but if we had a proper carrier, like the old Ark Royal, then they may not have invaded.
A lesson there for now.
