As thought, they have come across some unexpected problems with the drainage in Druro Place that has made it necessary to link to the system that is across Marine Parade.
Kent Highways appropriate manager was on the case first thing yesterday morning - apparently the work needs doing in the light of the heavy rainfalls we have been experiencing as we don't want to see surface water flooding anywhere, especially in the central part of the town. Just a shame they have tried to clean the gullies out after the resurfacing and found the unforseen problems.
However, in the Email I received there is a ray of hope in that the Highways manager has, and I quote: 'had a chat with the resurfacing team and they have advised me that, as the resurfacing was done so recently and as we used a grip fibre technique, we will be able to reinstate the carriageway in such a way that the surface will blend and there will be no obvious 'join' where the works have been carried out'.
I have replied that I will be keeping my eye on it.

There used to be a saying that ''you weren't a proper navvy until you had dug a hole in Dover''.

There is still a damn great hole behind Blakes which was dug at long range by Mr Hitler.

Following the delay while things were clarified see Nigels posts..they have now plunged headlong into virgin territory and are digging up the newly laid surface, re-affirming that traditional English Custom and Heritage as mentioned above by B W-S. Stick it down then dig it up.
Speaking of heritage and tradition, anyone remember that Bernard Cribbins song of old, when holes were holes and they still dug em where they werent supposed to...
it went like this... all together now..
"
dont dig there, dig it elsewhere
your diggin it round and it outa be square
"
Still, we can get some solace from the item in Nigel's post that says they will replace it as new and you wont see the join.

Update as of this week - they hope to finish by the end of this week and then get on with the resurfacing. It was a surface water issue as mentioned before. I have now included in my comments to Kent Highways that I trust that the infill of the trench will be packed down hard enough to aviod future sinkage.

They have now completed half of the new road and are digging up the other side. The 'done' side has been resurfaced but of course you can certainly see the join...but lets not be too hasty as it was only done earlier today and may need time to blend in. Good to see that The Mercury took up the story.
I dont understand the issue re surface water, but let me just say there wasnt any surface water issue where they dug it up. There is a surface water issue 60 yards away in the Millers carpark ( rear) which turns into Lake Geneva after a bit of average rain fall...but where they dug it up there wasnt a surface water issue, although with regards to a layman like myself, no doubt I wont be seeing the full picture.
But as said earlier, it was almost a classic case wasnt it. Brand new roadway and within minutes they dig it up. Bit of a shame. Good to see Nigel was on the case. They, The Highways Agency, certainly know they have been spotted and will be very inclined to do the smoothest job possible at this juncture.

Let's cut through all the 'council speak' jargon the problem was that basically the contractors failed to do the job properly in the first instance either accidentally or purposefully. So MacTrench of holediggers inc. return to complete the job for another fat little earner and 'bonus' payment.
Why wasn't there a penalty clause ensuring that the constructors didn't get paid until the work was completed satisfactorily.Obviously it was't inspected correctly upon completion.
Not that it matters it was only tax payers money the council were frittering away.

Just to put the final touches to this episode...the guys packed up yesterday. its all done. AS you can see any promises that you wouldnt see the join were greatly exagerated...
WE are left with an eyesore, where before, for one short period in time we had the perfect black and white seafront (see below).

Must say that is a very poor job, and they should be pulled back to put it right, before any payment is made to them.I will be on the phone myself first thing Monday morning to the Kent highways
