I don't know if anyone else has spotted this in yesterday's Dover Express.
"NOTICE OF PROPOSAL
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Dover District Council, in
exercise of Its powers under Sections 32,33,35 and Schedule
?• of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 ("the Act"), intends to
make an Order the effect of which will be to>
1. Revoke entirely the current system whereby users of the
District's leisure centres are reimbursed their parking charges
when parking in the car parks at Woolcomber Street, Dover,
Town wall Street, Dover and Tides Leisure Centre, Deal
The reasons for making the Dover District Council (Off Street
Parking Places) (Variation No 1) Order 2010 are to address
the current off-street car parking requirements, to remove any
ambiguity and provide clarity as to parking arrangements.

frontline services being cut are much more important.

I have no axe to grind here. Just wanted to highlight it in case it had been missed. Actually it's probably better to jog or cycle to the gym or pool.

If that post had read that all car parkIng near Morrisons was going to start charging with no refunds when shopping would you say the same thing? You would go else where. What other options do the user of Dover Leisure Centre have. Visiting the pool/gym is more of a regular occurance than the supermarket. Would it be fair to make a family, who are already paying to swim, now walk from River because they can't afford to frequently park there anymore? I think you all have not seen the bigger picture here. This is NOT a good move from Dover Council. We are supposed to encourage exercise in or ever increasing sized population. Very well saying go outside but what about the dark winter months?

I am not sure it is to do with being fair........
Parking charges are never fair! There is always a good reason to reduce or remove them. I am not defending these charges, or indeed any charges, just mentioning that if I go to the theatre I have to pay to travel or park, and that is also leisure.

As a non driver it always amazes me that those with cars moan about having to pay when they park.
The convenience of a car in comparison with public transport must outweigh the cost or they would leave the car at home.

It's true - if I could take public transport to work, or even to leisure activities, it would be nice, but public transport is neither convenient nor comfortable. There is no way I could commute to the far reaches of East Anglia each day without my car, and as an older person with a degree of sensibility I am reluctant to sit with a bunch of louts who often smell and have a vocabulary limited to words of four letters. I exaggerate but not by much. (Sits back to wait for the bile to be flung......)

Bern you make a valid point but in all honesty how often do you really go to the theatre or do leisure things? Maybe once or twice a week? Im on a rant here as I feel very strongly about this matter. I use the leisure centre almost EVERY day and already pay for the privilege of doing so. If there were other alternatives in Dover fair enough but there is no other leisure centre like that. I have an extremely busy life and not going by car would hinder that. You mention public transport but again that involves more costs and time, not always reliable either. The charges are going to happen an no doubt next year the leisure centre and car park charges will go up again.....it's a vicious circle. Buying a kid a play station would be a lot less hassle and cost effective in the long run (ok rant over now promise!)

The joys of travelling by train to Oxfordshire.
First struggle with suitcase to the station and on the train, then put up with the joy of listening to mobile phone conversations all around you.
Struggle down steps at Charing Cross to tube booking hall or have the indignity of having a taxi driver heave you into the cab. Why are London taxis so high off the ground?
Two further trains hoping that the lift is working when changing platforms and also hoping son is there to help me over the platform bridge at his little rural station.
Son then asks why I have not visited for a long time.

When we need a fitter population to take the strain off of a crumbling NHS it would seem the use of Leisure Centres should be actively encouraged, the removing of the parking concession seems very short sighted and petty.
Audere est facere.
Well, hang on to your hats because there are a lot more short sighted and petty cuts to come................
Jan - I don't use the train very often - I would if it were more pleasant. The last few times I have had to go by train it has been, as you indicate, horrible. Kids (and not-so-kids) with their mobiles, people talking so loud it hurts even thought they are right next to their phone/friend/playmate/partnerincrime, people with no idea about how to behave in public, no boundaries and apparently no sense of smell or access to soap and water. Cattling on and off the trains, no information about why your train has not arrived/has gone/is in flames on the tracks, little real direction unless you use the damned stations every day and know the place inside out, and many, many people with halitosis.
Yes, I can't wait to ditch the car and join my fellow humans.

Can't remember when I last paid to park other than in Deal if I need a very quick in and out of town. In Dover there is plenty of free parking literally minutes from the town centre and leisure centre....
Been nice knowing you :)
Some of which is outside my house.......so it's you, Paul aka Scotchie, is it??!!

there will indeed be many more little shocks to come, not just the parking at the leisure centre.

I have list somewhere of all the free parking places in Dover, given to me by the previous parking-services manager, I'll look for it and post on here.

there are indeed plenty of free parking spaces in dover, the trouble is that many are in roads that are so narrow that cars parked deny access to delivery and emergency vehicles.
