I usually post this time every year about people letting their dogs loose in the river and I'm doing so this year.
It's got worse, dogs constantly being allowed and encouraged by their owners to chase water fowl in the river along Barton Path.
This is the first year ever there has been no chicks at all of any description, I know ducks and moorhens have tried nesting as I've seen the nests.
I don't suppose it will ever stop.
While I'm on the subject, I was reading the River Parish magazine last week and inside it reports that several people have been fined for illegal fishing.
The question begs. why was this not put into the papers with names, and why only in river and not down this area?

different thing keith, the costcutter photos were of people not convicted.
i make a point of admonishing chaps who let their bull terriers loose in the river in pencester gardens.
oddly enough some don't take kindly to it.

The water fowl have tried nesting time and time again to no avail.
some birds will keep going until as late in the season as this, especially moorhens.
Whilst in the river cleaning it today a dog (again) scared the mother off this nest enabling me to get the photo. I do hope this lot hatch.

haven't seen that so often this year but there will always be a minority that think nothing of the effect on the wildfowl of dogs being let loose in the river.

Sad there's no young this year, is it because the nests and eggs are destroyed by those damn dogs Ian ?
Is it illegal for dog-owners to let their dogs jump in the river ? If it is, then maybe, just maybe, when the zero tolerance comes into force on September or October, they'll be seen and fined - that'll stop 'em (hopefully).

Not destroyed Roger, constant annoyance of being chased away and the birds will abandon the nest.
It's not illegal either, just common sense from dog owners would go along way as well as some sign-age to make them realise what they are doing.
It'll never happen.

Thanks Ian - I'm surprised it's not illegal to allow their dogs in the river, maybe we need a new bye-law.

No we don't Roger, we need the people responsible for the river to take control of it properly...24/7 and not once in a blue moon.
plant a load of crap, dig a little bit out and bugger off.
That's just what the E.A have done. what a bunch of *******.

I agree Ian, it does look like that's exactly what they have done.
I have just sent a letter off to them, but I don't have any names/email addresses of those who deal with the Dour - I know we met them along Barton Path some years ago, but have since lost their names and email addresses - do you have them Ian.
Do you have any info on the River Dour Steering Group - does it still exist ? do they still meet ?

Brian, I saw the moorhen chicks they nest on the island but I do not remember seeing any ducklings this year.

the enforcement officers will not have powers other than littering, dog dumping and fly tipping.

Birds are not bothered at that part of the river Brian no access for dogs.
Roger, I don't know or particularly any more, The only people who have ever looked after the river are the volunteers who get in and do it, past and present.

I'll keep bringing this one to the front until the people in charge take notice.

But do people in charge actually look in on here Ian ? I doubt it, especially if we're talking about the EA.

As promised here I am again, an update for you.
I stayed away for as long as possible and had a look today, had constant arguments with dick heads who believe their dogs have rights to reek havoc along the river and cause destruction, at one point it nearly came to a punch up.
this used to be one of the widest stretches along the river but no more, it used to be cleaned regularly and looked after, all finished now since the E.A took over.
As you see, only a couple of feet wide and the silt is building up something chronic. the river plants are going mad and no control over them. the river was only cleaned a few days ago and already is full of shit again.
This is the small section I look after now cos its at the bottom of my garden, the trout love it and people do to.

God that's awful Ian.
The last time I was along there, there were little islands of plants/vegetation in the middle of the river; as you rightly say, it has been neglected by the EA.
I have never seen a river so choked up with vegetation. An overdose of bio-diversity if ever there was one.
A terrible shame and it looks so awful too.
