As there are so many perceived items that do not have anything to do with Dover why not group each area into separate sections and call it the Dover District and Folkestone District Express, one paper to cover all.

Phil wanted to do beer fest photos Friday but his diary was already booked up. No-one from the beer festival contacted us so it was really down to Phil mentioning it there the pictures have been taken. Thank yo Roger/ Howard, glad I made you laugh Bern

I have contacted the Express in the past to do a prospective article, on the beer arriving the the previous Monday and the set-up, but was told that would not happen unless we spent a lot of money on advertising in the paper. I'll email you the opening picture kathy, just to show there's no hard feelings.

Thank you Peter and I don't know who said that to you but editorial on a local event can be done, we like advertising too but it's not a must. Next time call me 01303 851657

I have in the past covered shops opening for a feature for the LRCF website. I always ask if the press have been told. On several occasions I've been told much the same as Peter describes. Perhaps your switchboard Kathy are simply putting people through to ads without editorial being aware.

now kathy
to be fair i'm like peter and have a very biased view on the express sadly for differing reasons but none the less like a lot of others stopped buying the paper some years ago because of this.
You probably have no power to change the format()i don't know) but i will again highlight the issues, i dont expect any changes but welcome feedback or others views may well be addressed will watch the thread with interest.
years ago your lovely editir(mr findley) ran a campaign against the labour party(which was fair enough) but wasn't consistent with other parties thus showed a bias
which is not good for supposed non political community paper.
it went as far as trying to get a story on an individual by contacting his wife, son in law, mother in law, chasing him, and others.
I'm unsure if he thought the express could be re modelled to be like the sun where i understand he has been in employment, but the COMMUNITY bit of the paper got lost in his years long campaign against some individuals.
On this forum, and in the local area I try to encourage people to be involved in the community, but putting yourself in the spotlight put people off when they saw how mr findley acted.
I also personally hd mr findley and his journalist's chase me(as far away as chester!!!!) to try to ge a story on me, taking photo's everywhere i went
and even 5 years or more of being out of politics still noticed a dubris article of being out for a meal with the wife(who's realy interested????)
For me the DUBRIS bit became far to personal and the sooner it is scrapped the better.
when you look at people like jennie morgan an indy cllr then not over controvesial announcing she wont buy the express because of the disgusting attacks you can see the express lost its way.
whilst its correct the paper could report on local politics it should be a balanced view point.
I supported an indiviual in the express some years ago thus was then hounded for years after.
the express was one reason for my l;eaving local politics so i suppose mr findley will happy with that.
my own view is that the paper needs to be a COMMUNITY paper and not model itself on the sun.
so many people are switched off by these former methods.
more local stories,
as others have said a local office with local reporters does make a difference to get an up to date story, but obviously there are costs to this.
kathy i realise you are only the messenger so i apologise in advance as this is no dig at yourself as i'm sure you try hard to make it the paper everyone would like to see.
ALL POSTS ARE MY OWN PERSONAL VIEWS
Maybe Simon was hoping you would stay in Chester.... just saying

I must say the newspaper was fantastic when i was part off the save the schools campaign years ago i had a fabulous close friendship with both my good friends Phil Reilly and Mary Graham from the mercury they both got behind the fight and I found Simon very charming .

I'd like to see the weekly TV listings in the Express. The Mercury includes them and on occasion this has swung which paper I bought.
And as with all newspapers if you have nothing to hide then whats the worry?????

Phil, I know not whether this will simplify or complicate your life, but it is worthy of consideration...

i think that the stuff keith refers to are in the past, there are very few personal attacks nowadays in the local press.
And all new reporters etc there now so really shouldnt tie them all to them same brush

What a fine start to the day, thank you Mel. Here was I, old fuddy-duddy, content with, "tarred by the same brush". Now I am free to picture some ancient form of rural punishment. An early form of rustic 'stocks' that may befall some yokel nabbed by the copse.

kathy mentions not being informed of the beer festival.
surely if the staff do not come into dover they would check local websites to see what is going on, we had 3 threads on the festival.
Melissa, there is no-one who would not want to retain some privacy - to say that if you have nothing to hide why be bothered is to fail to understand the massive intrusion involved and the amoral way "liberty of communication" is applied when someone wants to pry.
I did not know Finlay had been on the Sun, but I am not surprised in the least. I no longer buy the "local" paper and take at your word the fact that personal attacks and intrusions have reduced, and will try not to "tie to the same brush" all reporters, and I think I manage that anyway - some people I know are actually very principled journalists and have achieved a great deal without resorting to foul play and deviance, and for whom I have the greatest respect. However, they are a minority, especially in tabloid journalism, and I would note that, particularly in local journo-land, there are quick-wins for them to be had reporting love 'em stories around kids and schools - and fair play, it is a good way to get publicity for the events so i am not knocking it! - that provide a smokescreen for the paucity of local coverage elsewhere and the dirty tricks that sometimes enable the other stories to be reported.
