I saw that antique shop for the first time the other day and thought the stock was very good.
I didn't know it was there, only saw it because I was on my way to Morrisons on foot.
There should be a body that new enterprises can go to, to get publicity, help with a launch and promotion; that body should be a Town-Team type of body where the Manager helps new businesses with a number of things from business-rates, fire-risks and marketing - not in-depth necessarily.
All of it could be done with a nominal membership fee.
Good Luck to this new shop.

Tony is right, K College is opening a salon staffed by by students studying with the college. A fantastic initiatives by K College to help get students working and gaining essential experience to make them more employable. I have been invited to attend the official opening on the 6th June, so stayed tuned.

Ah for short memories Brian. Shopfitters always tell people that whatever shop they are doing is going to be some sort of sex shop. When Poundland was being fitted out they went so far as to stick a sign in the window saying. 'opening soon Ray's adult book exchange' before changing it to one advertising some sort of sex supplies wholesaler.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Great News to hear, hopefully K College are paying business rates renting premises in the town, running a small business for students to go that one step forward gaining experience in a working environment to hopefully go on to full time employment

I wonder whether KC are paying business rates and what sort of lease they have. They surely can't be paying the commercial rent usually asked for prime locations in Dover. Would they qualify for the same sort of deal on rates as a charity shop? Does anyone know who owns the building?

They will be paying full business rates unless they are a registered charity, as for rent I suspect they have done a deal with the landlord at a nominal fee as it is better for the landlord to have someone in there than not (the landlord gets lower insurance costs, doesn't pick up the utilities bills, and doesn't pay the rates)

It may be better Ross, but it doesn't seem to happen much else in Town or we wouldn't have so many closed shops.

The old stationery and art shop on the corner of Castle St/ Russell St is shortly to re-open as an Asian grocer & corner shop.

Sadly it has taken time for that message to sink in with some landlords
That is great news Peter

We are very well supplied with ethnic grocers now. In Dover alone we have Polka and Baltic Branch in the market square area, U Babuni and the new Czech shop opposite the town hall, the post office in Pencester has an Asian/oriental/ Caribbean section upstairs at the back, a Filipino lady has an oriental shop opposite the Charlton Centre and at Burgoyne Heights is a small branch of Everest Cash & Carry of Cheriton. They all have some great stuff and prices are very reasonable.

surprised that someone was willing to do the work to make it habitable.

It was originally a ladies clothes shop at the time of Sainsburys being next door, I can't remember the name but there was another in Ashford with similar branding.
The owner was once a student on one of my photography classes, he obviously had enough of women's clothes during his working day as he preferred photographing them with none on as a 'hobby'

There was no work needed for the shop Steptoe and Son moved into, they just shifted round from their shop inside the Charlton Centre.
My wife Chris has rented a little unit through them at the back of the Charlton Centre where you enter the carpark and is dipping her toe in the water at buying and selling second hand furniture and making some of it into Shabby Chic.

You are right Brian it was the pet shop, but not Jollyes, it was Johnsons, and I worked there for nearly 16 years before he went bankrupt and then jollyes moved in and has now been open 7 years this september.
