We had a rather lengthy thread on the portakabin Roger. local people were up in arms about the monstrosity and rightly so, the Folkestone Rd was blighted enough before it arrived. I feel certain that Dr Premnath would have been up in arms if one had been sited next door to him.
Regarding the early drinks licence I believe this is to cater for port and ferry workers coming off shift.

There is no need for a 100 hour service, if you are at the hospital you are given treatment and enough drugs or tablets to tide you over until the chemists are open, Tesco chemist closes the same time that any other chemist does they are not open 100 hours

Sheila, that's the hospital.
I was talking about the out of hours GP service that just happens to be based at Buckland, they will give you a paper prescription to take to a pharmacy same as any other doctor and if you need it urgently where are you going to get it after 7pm ? (- sorry, just checked and Tesco pharmacy is open to 8pm weekdays)

My daughter's partner uses this surgery and is always complementry about it and likes the idea of the adjoining pharmacy.
I think there is no reason at all to have a drinks licence at such an early hour, the excuse about shift workers is not a good enough reason, after all they do not sleep the entire day.

Re post 40 by Roger Walkden. You may like to look at new premises licensing applications lodged with DDC (which as a DDC councillor you get notice of). There is an application for a premises license for White Cliffs Convenience store, 141 Folkestone Road and with reference to sale of alcohol. At first I thought the address was for general shop in the parade but then worked out that the address is indeed the address of the the medical practice. Strange.
Agree with Jan Higgins this issue of opening such long hours for the sale of alcohol is a red herring when shift workers are mentioned. There are only one group of people who need early opening hours.
If it is the medical practice (and perhaps there is a mistake) selling alcohol does not sit well with a medical, facility. We all know the harm that excessive alcohol brings. And although not my ward am going to follow issue up with DDC in case been a mistake.

The sale of alcohol early morning is not a black and white issue. For people who predominantly work nights consider our breakfast time as early evening. The shop at the junction of Castle St and Russell St have been selling alcohol early morning to people coming home from the docks for some time with no problems. I seem to remember the Co-op trying for an early morning licence to cater for the same trade a few years back.
The proposed one in the Folkestone Rd is a different issue as there is no big employer close by that operates shift systems so one may conclude that someone collecting their methadone would like to wash it down with something strong. The knock on effect could well be more anti social behaviour.

I remember the days when it was the other way round.

Paydens in Canada Road Walmer is another 100 hour pharmacy sited alongside a Doctors Surgery There are several other pharmacies sited alongside Doctors surgeries, such as in Aylesham, and in Thanet, and indeed all over the country.
Clearly, a lot of the posts are based on misinformation, and a lack of knowledge of the real facts.
As offered, we are very happy to explain the facts and regulations about the Surgery, the pharmacy, the 100 hour pharmacy rules, how the two pharmacies came along at the same time, the new "Buckland Hospital" etc if anyone is interested.

Re post 49 Are you able to advise what the situation is regarding the premises licence issue, does it include sale of alcohol. Have emailed DDC but not yet had a reply. thank you.

The only planning application I can find is for the Pharmacy not the convenience store but the objections to the Pharmacy are worth a read through.

My daughter's partner is on permanent nights and would not dream of buying his beers on the way home at anything from 4.00 to 7.00 in the morning, so the shift worker excuse is a red herring.

That is his choice let others make their choice, especially those that have been "on board" for two weeks.

Does that mean those workers no longer get the legal allowance that my husband used to get to bring home.
Morrisons and Asda both open at 7.00am so there is no reason those desperate for their fix could not wait another hour.

Irrelevant to those who have been onboard for two weeks as they get relieved during the day. Depending on which schedule their ship is on, this will be at 0900, 1100, 1300 or 1500. Therefore the earliest that any local will be in the town will be 1000 so they can have a drink in normal hours if they are that desperate. However, the majority live in other parts of the country or on the continent. Many will be driving long distances so a drink is irrelevant until they get home. Others will be heading for the train station on their way to various airports and will probably quaff their first libation in the airport bar.
Speaking for myself, I just want to get home and put my feet up. Very different from the old days before live onboard, twenty years or so ago, when we all lived locally and worked either days or nights. It used to be a mad rush to get off after a 14 hour day and race to the pub before it closed. I lost count of the number of times I would hurtle into the nearest pub to the docks in time to hear "Time gentlemen please. Haven't you got homes to go to?!!!"

Went past this morning and the convenience store and pharmacy were looking very nice and best of all the portakabin has gone. The whole effect is very pleasant.
