09:5885409I watched a brilliant DVD last night of Andre Rieu in Melbourne. Towards the end the whole audience joyously sang "Advance Australia Fair".
I pondered to myself what if a similar thing were to happen here? If the crowd sang "God Save The Queen" the whole mood would change. Our national anthem is a total dirge. Any suggestions for a replacement? Even though I like Edward Elgar I don't think that "Land of Hope and Glory" is any better.
I daresay that the monarchy loving sycophants will rise up in horror but surely we could do better.
What say you?
Have a nice day.

10:2485413The Nation Anthem is a real dirge, I hate it.
Maybe a competition should be held to create a more cheerful and uplifting anthem with the population picking the winner. I bet there would be some equally awful contenders.

10:3885416I saw a video on Youtube of a comedian (Aussie) who started out with the first verse of Advance Australia Fair at the end of his concert, then got the band to launch into a rock number (might have been Bon Jovie) that fitted the words perfectly, the crowd were on their feet singing, fantastic. I'll try to find the link once I wake up.
Can anyone find an alternative tune for our national anthem?

11:1685431in the past on here i have suggested "land of hope and glory" and "jerusalem" but the vast majority wanted the present one to stay.

12:5285445I would vote for 'Jerusalem' always found it to be motivational and stirring and I can remember the words too.
National anthem has most floundering on the other verses and can be very cringe-worthy at functions without a lyric sheet.

13:0285452I`m all for tradition, but in the case of the national anthem, I`ll make an exception. It`s dull, boring and totally outdated. Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem are better to me, though I can`t think of anything else.

13:1085455The Archers Theme Tune, with a nod to Billy Connolly for the idea. I'd vote for it.

13:4885469Elgar and Jerusalem are about England only, whereas the national anthem is for the whole UK. Let's keep God Save the Queen for the UK and let each country of the Union choose its own.
Jerusalem for England; Men of Harlech, Scotland the Brave; for Ulster, something non-sectarian like The Mountains of Mourne.

13:4985470My three proposals for the British National Anthem are: Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem, Rule Britannia. The second and third in particular.

13:5885472Yes Alex, I agree about Rule Britannia for the UK. Scotland Wales and Ulster might not like the other two much.

13:5885473seems like times have changed, the majority go along with a change.
seems everyone is for "land of hope and glory" and "jerusalem" with alex adding "rule britannia".
brian favours an english version of the marseillaise.

13:5985474I prefer the version of the Marseillaise which ends 'ou est le papier'.

14:0385475Though I like Rule Britannia, do we really rule the waves in view of our current navy cuts? Not very appropriate I`d have thought.

14:1685476Well Britannia rules the waves. The escatological meaning goes beyond warships.

14:3885481I would really be hard pushed to think of something as jolly and uplifting as "Advance Australia Fair" but this surely must be a good contender:-

15:4085492excellent terry, would make an excellent anthem.
getting back to the various countries within the kingdom, wales already have "cwm rhondda" and the scots have "the flower of scotland, both rusing tunes.
maybe the people of northern ireland would choose "the londonderry air"?
