Vic. Do carry on. Your narrative reminded me of my late father's remanicences about the war (and Carry on Sergeant!).
Looking forward to 'Carry on up the Harbour Board'.

It really was a very old van no M.O.T. needed then not like today inside was steel shelves to the roof they was for putting my trays of cakes buns, rolls beard was put on the floor ,anyway it was two days before Easter and my van was full of hot cross buns for the cafes and shops etc, well I was coming up Tom tyne in folkestone at about 0400 hrs in the morning I was following a lorry we turned to go up the hill, when he stored the engine which in turn made me stop suddenly and all my trays slide to the back doors and the string holding them closed broke and the doors open up and all my buns came out and were rolling back down the hill,at that time there was no one about ,but the noise from my back doors and the trays hitting the road had lots of the public running out into the road picking up as many rolls as they could carry and run off with them.

we did not have mobile phones then so I had to find a phone box to ring back to the officeand tell them they send out a lorry with more buns and cakes but it made me very late and some of the cafes and shops cut back or even cancelled their orders ,but I did not get the blame when I got back.next story will be fun to read like this one ,

I had just come back from doing my morning round and a man came up to me and said I would like a word with you in the office please.well I did not know him and this was the first time I had see him, anyway we went in the office, sit down vic ,which I did. He went on to tell me his name but I will not say it on open forum so lets just say it was Mr B. I am the area manger for Kings mans bakery and I will be taking over here for a bout 4 weeks but there will be only the office,as you already know this is the last day here for the staff of the bakery. He went on to say"Vic you do alot of hours far to many ,and did you not know you was not getting the right hourly rate you was being paid well below that, so going through the pay books I have decided to pay you back the money that is owned to you,why you was not paid the right amount I do not know but I will find out. "Was you not told what your rate would be ,"No sir I came sraight from the army to here and was only to please to get the job.

Any way I got back that morning and again called to the office "Right as from to night temporary out of Deal we have taken over a building by the Deal Hospital your bread etc will be taken there and you pick up your van which will be loaded for you."But I live in Dover and do not have a car."We know that there is going to be a very small van which you can take home each night we will pay for the fuel ,but it must not be used for your own purpose +it is only insure for one person so do not have a person sitting in it at any time. Also your old round covered a lot of miles that now has been cut down we already have rounds coving some of the same places as you went to. your new round now will stop at the Sunshine cafe in Chergton Folkestone ,but on the way back you will do one delivery to a restaurant at bay hill in St Margarets bay, The owner of that is the same owner as the Sunshine cafe in Follkestone. So your hrs are cut down to 8t0 ten hours each day starting at 0400hrs so you will be paid unsociable hours of 4 and the rest at day rate but it will the right rate not the made up ones you have been doing .I have found out why you was not paid the right rate your backpay you will get this week there is no need to tell you anymore about what happen only that it will never happen a gain
