    Paul, it's "oesophagus"!
    The reason they stopped giving aspirin as a plain pain killer, is because, I think I'm right in saying, some people were having a severe reaction (mainly children).
    It is given in small doses to prevent strokes.
    The therapeutic dose is 75mg per day, but the normal strength was 300mg and taken 3 or 4 times a day for a prolonged period often caused bleeding.
    It is fantastic stuff, and all from the bark of the willow tree (at least originally)
