Good one there Scotchie, baffled as to how you got the shot...if it wasnt actually in a helicopter! I didnt realise that the building was completely gutted inside. Ron yes its very grim around there. The last time the building shown was used seriously as I remember, was when Netto opened what must have been the worst store ever in there. No ambience...just basic boxes on shelves. Needless to say Joe Public shunned it.
Twas cheap though I give them that.

They've been working on that MFI building for some time. I understand the Britannia is next, so we're getting ready for the next phase - you can't put buildings up, until you've knocked the old ones down.

Vic. You seem to have become Dover's biggest pessimist; I've not read a posting from you for ages that was upbeat.
Are you in a lot of pain and discomfort ? I know that can make you look upon things in a bad/negative light.

No I just look at what I see with both my eyes open,I am not in anyway a pessimist, but what we see is what we see.If I good see a better Dover coming over the hill.I would get right behind it,But that is not the case all we get is this or that might happen but in real terms nothing happens, apart from the fencing going up and around Dover like some old fort. And please do not think I am the only one that is thinking that way.And yes I am in alot of pain at this time, but that would all go if I cold see a better Dover on its way.

Vic, I find myself agreeing with you yet again this so-called regeneration has been going on for as long as Ican remember and there is still nothing done.
Other councils have rebuilt, demolished and rebuilt again, we here just get promises and a bit more fencing.
This Council has become complacent, stale and is in need of a change. Hopefully the blues might get a kick up the posterior in May and new councillors take over.
Roger as for Vic being a pessimist, there isn't much to be optimistic about, the town is decaying and in some areas you can still see the aftermath of the second world war. It is little wonder that people from the cruise liners are bussed to Canterbury, I'd do the same

The ST James area is one large development site .Roger has posted often enough to state the old buildings have to be removed before new ones constructed .The fences go up to protect the public .Health and Safety
Perhaps if some people looked at things more positivly and looked around at places in our District.where visitors enjoy what is on offer .
Kearsney Abbey ,Russell Gardens and Bushy Ruff are looking lovely .Plenty of people there yesterday .

The last paragraph of your post I agree with you entirely Sue but you have to admit the town itself is a disgrace, a falling down multi storey car park, an old cinema which is an absolute disgrace, a gaping hole where the Crypt used to be and top that with hideous 60s architecture which blends in with nothing and now we are importing the Berlin Wall to surround the prime land in the town.
Right time for me to go to the offy and get my superstrength, then wrap a blanket round me and sit in a shop doorway begging for a few pence. Then maybe lunchhtime i'll have enough to wander along to a well known national pub chain, drink more lager, flck fag ends, swear and see how far I can spit.

I would prefer to see the fencing than the derelict area that is behind it. In the present financial climate it would be a very brave developer to rush into anything. Developers are at work though, think of the new housing going on up Park Avenue.
Vic is a pessimist it has nothing to do with him being in pain. I know a lot of people who are in permanant pain, I am one of them, who are upbeat and cheerful and think the town is very slowly improving.

We are not talking about the district we are talking about the town.As For St James st, i still have all the plans etc from over 30years ago for what was going to be done, it does not take that long to build a new town infact all over the Uk we have had new Towns build and Dover is still waiting for one Area to get done out of the many that need doing. And Jan please read my post again I am not on about any pain I am in ,just about seeing Dover as it is, that is the pain I am in.
Dave is also dead right with his post,we need to see new faces up at district get rid of some of the talkers replace them with some doers,We might have the right party there and its leader but behind that there needs to be changes and the bigest need to be done is the Panning dept.

Round and round go these arguements... it is NOTHING to do with DDC, the Council do not have millions to spend on St James, they can only try to facilitate and encourage commercial money to the area. You can't force businesses to come to an area and spend money, if the numbers don't stack up they won't come. What DDC can do is purchase land and make it as easy as possible for them to build on it of they want to which is what they are currently doing !!
PS it was taken from the Keep of Dover Castle

Been nice knowing you :)

Paul with respect this has been going on for years, certainly the town was starting to get run down 43 years ago now its even worse. Other councils seem to rebuild why can't Dover.
The fact is DDC have become apathetic and complacent, all they do is talk, talk and more talk. What everybody wants is action, this council does not seem to be able to deliver that.
In May its time to get rid of some of them, time some new blood was voted in, they certainly couldn't do any worse and who knows they might be inspired enough to get things moving.

Dave, I hate to disallusion you but talk, talk, talk is what all councils do whatever their colour or however long they have been in power, it is an unwritten rule.

No matter which colour is in power (even Vic) will be able to overide the demographics of Dover - how can anyone force someone like Debehams or M&S into spending millions if they don't want to and don't think there is the consumer spend??
I'd like to hear of "Other councils" in the same situation as Dover:
Westwood Cross has killed Margate and Ramsgate towns
Folkstone is rather a dump despite the Creative Quarter and promised millions
Canterbury and Ashford are large towns with 360 degree catchment area
Down the coast at Gosport the town has had it's life sucked out by Portsmouth developments
I can't think of anything like Dover really.....
Been nice knowing you :)
It is disgusting that still nothing has been done with the Crypt Site. I believe the fire was back in the 70's. Of all Dover that is the part that visitors from the Port see first and it is a disgrace. If push comes to shove why not knock it all down and leave it as an archaeological area where people could at least see the past.
The whole King Street etc and the bottom of Castle St are in a parlous state, dirty and decrepit. Can anyone doubt that Dover is going to the dogs.
And as for Russell Gardens, Kearsney Abbey and Bushey Ruff, yes lovely but are there any signs directling tourists there?
