There is nothing in this article that is not relevant to Dover and the shocking lack of imagination and innovation shown by its reps, elected and otherwise. I simply do not accept or understand why we cannot get our act together and work in partnership with a wide range of partners to drive up Dovers profile and business. Where is our local entrepreneurial spirit in local government? Where is the evidence of thinking outside the box with a bit of energy thrown in? We have local producers, farmers, shops who could support and benefit from this approach.

interesting article, she was in margate recently and was of the opinion that the boarded up shops should be turned into residential accommodation, we don't have so many boarded up shops in dover.
the local produce is some of the best in the country and much could be made of promoting this, i have heard many of our restaurants espouse about the quality.
Exactly - The Allottment, who produce fab food alongside Blakes, could be cited. We have the beautiful Town Hall complex of buildings. We have an abundance.

I agree wholeheartedly. Mary Portas has insight which few people have, especially those already in business. What she could do for Dover can only be imagined !!

I agree with the sentiments in the article and expressed above
The trouble is lack of vision on the part of many but especially DDC and town centre property owners.
Take the Saturday market as an example rather than the collection of miscellany that we currently have it should be a way of celebrating, promoting and encouraging local produce.
I know Roger tried with some success to promote local businesses and a buy local mind set, but again this had too little support from those who should know better - we cannot and should not rely on national chains for the success of out local retail sector.

They do the same at Wookey Hole, and in front of me right now is "Wookey Hole Cave Aged Farmhouse Cheddar" It is a A traditionl West Country Farmhouse Cheddar aged deep within the caves at Wookey Hole, and that is where we got it last week.
We love it and i am about to have some more."MM" lovely.

Re..the other threads....Dover's Caves and Tunnels....
Are we asking why Cheddar Cheese is not made in these tunnels
It must be very stretching to have two stalls in the Market here....

I have in front of me now Caserccia Italian Salami A pickled Egg and my cheddder Cheese,I have already been down to Blakes today and had two. very hot pickled eggs but i love food like this.

Ross has identified the chronic and woeful lack of vision in the centre of the town, cutting at its very heart. When will that change? There is so much potential here, so many opportunities to promote Dover and its local assets. Are there any local farmers or producers out there who could support a lobby of local reps? There is a real market for local assets, and some business to be gained if there is a bit of lateral and creative thinking done.

Interesting piece on the BBC this morning about how Rotherham council have successfully regenerated their town centre in the face of out-of-town shopping centres preying on the centre. Councillors should investigate in detail.

#14 Indeed they should. And not in a while after some thought and a few committee meetings. Now.

Agreed but doubt if it will happen. Even if they do the answer will be we can not afford to do that or we do not have the power to enforce that.
I firmly believe that a councillor should have to live in the ward they represent then they care what happens to it, to many of our councillors are only there so they can say 'I am a councillor'.

I think they should evidence why not rather than why, that is, if they say we can't afford it, show us why not if those other authorities can. What is so different about this bunch that means we cannot do what others have done and are doing. Answers from local reps would be appreciated. And no process driven rubbish either, no stuff about this paper or that meeting or this committee. Basically, why can't we do this, in words of one syllable?

The expression to pull the wool over the eyes springs to mind Bern
Sadly the impression given by to many DDC and Town councillors is 'there is nothing in this for me so I will not bother'.
