A20 Roundhill Viaduct Joint Failure
The Project
A series of overnight closures will take place on the A20 near Folkestone this week as work on damaged bridge components continues.
Two expansion joints on the Roundhill Viaduct need to be replaced as they were identified as having failed. As a temporary measure, plates are being installed on the bridge to cover the components and ensure the road remains open safely in both directions.
One lane will be open to traffic in each direction and a 30mph speed restriction will be in force for safety reasons.
We are continuing to work on a permanent repair to the failed components, this involves procuring custom-made replacement joints, the design, manufacture and installation of which is expected to take at least six months.
We are working with the manufacturer to try to reduce this timescale. In the meantime we are monitoring traffic flows and continuing to investigate if there are any feasible medium-term solutions to allow two lanes to be open in each direction.
Expansion joints allow the structure to expand and contract with seasonal changes in temperature.
Work started on Monday 04 July and will continue until the end of the week. It will take place between 8pm and 6am each night when traffic flows are lowest and will involve overnight carriageway closures.
A fully signed diversion route will be in operation during the closures and the details of the works are as follows:
Overnight on Monday 04 July and Tuesday 05 July the coastbound carriageway will be closed from the M20 junction 13
Overnight on Wednesday 06 July the London-bound carriageway will be closed from the junction with the A260. A two hour closure of the coastbound carriageway will also be needed during this night (expected between 12am and 2am)
Overnight on Thursday 07 July the London-bound carriageway will be closed from Courtwood Interchange
On Friday 08 July the London-bound carriageway from the A260 will be closed for a period of approximately 2 hours (expected between 12am and 2am).
While coastbound closures are in place, traffic will exit the M20 at junction 13 and be diverted via the A259 and the A260 to rejoin the A20 at Alkham Valley. The London-bound closures will follow the same diversion route in the opposite direction. Traffic affected by the London-bound closure from Courtwood Interchange will use the B2011, A260 then A259.
Elements of these works are weather dependent and so it may be necessary to extend this programme.
No work will be visible at the site until the joints are ready for installation, however the restrictions must remain in place for the safety of road users.
Safety cameras will be used on each carriageway to enforce the 30mph speed restriction.
Drivers are advised to check conditions before they set out, and plan their journeys to avoid the area if possible.
