i must admit that i was surprised that hansen felt the need to apologise when clearly no offence was meant, paul and i can remember when it was preferred to the word "black" as mentioned above.
yes brian that was how it was in south africa.

Perhaps it's just an excuse for a few black footballers (not coloured - heaven forfend!) to get on their high horses.
You know you can push something too far and undermine your own cause.
I cannot help but feel there is an element of "colonial revenge" going on here. This is tyranny - an abuse of a framework which has rightly been created to prevent racism.
It is pathetic that Hansen has to grovellingly backtrack and apologise for an innocent word which was not intended to offend.
Who are the intolerant ones here?

Everywhere there's even a sniff of racism, or the least trace of a mention of supposed racism, the lynch mob are there to make matters so much worse with their pretend feeling of being offended on behalf of others who are not.

So much depends on how something possibly offensive is said, the context and if the offender is in general a popular person in the first place.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

I agree Jan, but in so many cases, the person (or group) that the "racist" comment is made against, aren't offended, the complaints are usually made by others, apparantly on their behalf.
Surely any element of racist should be decided by the person themselves - can a group make a valid complaint, if not every one in that group, complains ?

strange how black is the correct word here yet in the states it is african american.
not sure how rio ferdinand is black, he has a white mother and it shows, the same as stan collymore who managed to get involved.
the only reason that alan hansen apologised must be the over sensitivity of the b.b.c and the prospect of him losing his job, one of the highest paid in television.

Ah Brian, that's O.K. because we're white and it's only the term black that's racist - apparantly.

Stan Collymore, woman beating self-confessed dogger, is in no position to lecture anyone about morals.
