First of all John was due to arrive at about 1230 so Sue Chandler (Deputy Leader at DDC) and I went down to the Sea Sports Centre on behalf of DDC to welcome him.
No-one was around so we had some coffee, then a sandwich and eventually found out from the Rowing Club that it was more likely to be between 3pm and 4pm.
Still OK as we both had meetings at Whitfield at 2pm.
Back we went at 3pm - still no body in sight so we had a large pot of tea this time while I text my contact at the Rowing Club to learn that it was now more likely to be after 6pm.
Sue had an evening meeting but I returned to the sea front just before 6pm only to meet the Dover Express photographer coming the other way who told me that John had already arrived and landed near the lifeboat station.
I know these things can't run to time but two of us did do our utmost to try to be there.
