    Volumes have been written about the appeal of Dungeness, and not surprisingly the word "magical" emerges to describe a particular quality seen and felt by different people in different ways. For me it's one of the few places where I find the light plays amazing tricks that are difficult to predict and impossible to define. I've also seen this in other parts of the UK, particularly the Penwith district of Cornwall, parts of Wales and the Western Isles of Scotland - but seldom elsewhere on the south and east coasts.

    Mentioning Derek Jarman, who spent his last years there at Prospect Cottage. If you read his book "Derek Jarman's Garden" I think you'll get an insight into what draws people to this remarkable place.

    Interestingly the geographers tell us the Dungeness shingle bank was in existence for centuries while the rest of Romney Marsh was under water.
