IN DOVER MARKET SQUARE
Live opera events are coming to the Big Screen in Dover Market Square from 7.30pm on Thursday 17 May and Wednesday 30 May. The Royal Opera House has announced that as part of this year's BP Summer Big Screen performances, The Royal Opera's La boheme (17 May) and Falstaff (30 May) will be shown at the Big Screen Live Site in Dover. These world-class productions will be beamed live from Covent Gardens. 15 May 2012 15:32172530I'm sorry but I can't really see the point of this. I do like classical music but not all operas. Even so, if my favourite were to be shown I doubt very much if I would go. The problem is the sound. What emanates from the screen is truly awful.
If there was a small re-broadcast unit in screen so that I could listen in stereo on my Walkman then I would go.
Once again sorry, but this screen is just visual, to put anything on where the sound is paramount is ridiculous.
I never did get an answer by the way as to why the PCT contributed £35k of health funds to it.

I posted the following details from Tom's link on the Road Closed thread yesterday but worth repeating here just for a larf, it's a strange opera performance where there's no chance of a little something from the bar and the audience are threatened with a body search!

What I need to know before I attend:
The performances will be screened within a controlled area in the Market Square which is accessible to all (event conditions apply).
Seating: A limited number of seats will be provided although anyone wishing to attend is encouraged to bring their own collapsible seating; tables will be allowed subject to a maximum number.
Facilities: Toilet facilities provided. Picnic style refreshments are permitted although this is a non alcohol venue. There are also numerous restaurants, coffee shops and bars located around the Square.
Event Conditions: In the interest of public safety, the following conditions will apply in Market Square:-
* Free entry to the event enclosure is on a first come first served basis subject to capacity.
* Event stewards will be entitled to search persons and/or their possessions on entry to the event enclosure.
* Staff will not take responsibility for any prohibited items.
* Prohibited items include, but are not restricted to, large parasols, gazebos, awnings, portable barbecues and Alcohol.
* The organisers reserve the right to refuse admission to the event enclosure for whatever reason.
* All children (under 16) must be accompanied by an adult.
* All litter should be disposed of in the bins provided or taken home.

must be because of last year and all that graffitti, they never caught the culprit/s.

I can (n't) imagine Jean sitting in the Market Square of an evening, with coat, scarf, hat and gloves on and telling herself that's she's enjoying it.

Please be aware that streets surrounding Trafalgar Square are designated as a 'no drinking zone' by Westminster Council; so please only consume alcohol within the event arena."
There is no mention of 'no alcohol' or searches. They do say that glass vessels are not allowed, but that plastic flagons will be freely available. I can't see the majority of Dovorians turning out simply to watch it and be frisked. Not, really not, wanting to be negative, but I do think a bit f pazzaz about it would boost it a bit.
