most of you will know that this closed after 125 years of service and eventually a community group was formed to bring it back to use.
i was quite surprised to see it operational this afternoon, a winter day in mid week.
the original idea was just for summer, quite a success story for the people who worked so hard to reopen it.

Come to Dover, Tom. Stay at Blakes, enjoy good food and ale or wine, and there are many forumites who will show you both the obvious and hidden delights of the town and surroundings.

Oh the Leas lift! Many years ago when I was young my nan used to take me to Folkestone on the bus from Whitstable to Canterbury to Folkestone. The highlight of my day was when she took me on the lift - I thought it was magic!! Happy memories

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

Oh that is great spent many an hour going up and down on it with my grandfather as a small child, and one of the funicular cable railways featured on the Great British Railways, with Micheal portilo.

didn't think there would be much response when i started this thread, nice to read people's childhood memories of the lift.
it clearly has a place in peoples hearts in dover as well as folkestone.

I loved the lift as a child, and it was always a treat to go on it. The building at the bottom is lovely, and once we'd got to the top I and my parents used to spend ages too just watching the water pour in and then the lift slowly start to move. I even love the sound of it.
We rode on it during the trienniel, with the Martin Creed installation, which positively strained as it was getting to the top of the hill - one wondered if both the lift and the music could ever make it!
It's a real delight that the lift is still running. There is a track that is disused, sadly demonstrating what could have been lost. It begs the question - how on earth do they weed such a steep track and sides? (A very brave barber, I'd suggest!) There is also another coach, the steps coach, which I remember from my childhood and in which I always delighted to ride. That's stored safely; maybe that might come out one day too, to be used.

Great News, a Big Well Done to the volunteers for getting it up and running so soon
I have a distant memory of my Grandmother taking me up on a lift just like the Folkestone one, I think it could have been Hastings or thereabouts.

We (WHPS) similarly loft out a couple of years back when getting our gun made as the company went bust.
It is still a few years later and it is still ongoing as to whether we will get anything (unlikely)

Been nice knowing you :)

How about a scheme to forward sell tickets at £1 each or a season ticket for 25 trips for £20 soon add up with all the local interest there seems to be..
