"Divide and concur." There must be a limit as to how many issues any two people can argue about without agreeing on one or more along the way.

the issue is more about who rules the blues, dave has made sure that he has a few big hitters on his side whilst david davis is claiming the support of back benchers and the party members.

David davis does have a lot of support, maybe not enough at yet, but the band wagon is rolling

latest news is that charlie is against gay marriages claiming that is what his constituents think, a cynic might think he has suddenly stopped supporting his leader as he sees change coming and thinks it wise to distance himself before the bloodletting.

Surely if everyone in a political party had exactly the same view then it would be pointless having a party and we can just vote for (and pay for!!!!) one of each colour ????!!!!

Been nice knowing you :)

you clearly don't know how it works paul, basically if someone wants to climb the greasy pole they make sure that their views are exactly the same as the leader. once they see the possibility of a change of leadership they watch the way the wind blows and vote accordingly.
there are of course many that choose to go with their conscience, they never get anywhere.

It's most likely that Dave has lost the vote for the Conservatives from many communities: Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim.
Last night I was reading on the Web that thousands of Tory members ripped up their membership card because of this stance of DC.
He has already been forced into a U-turn, and now it is: the Church of England cannot officiate same-sex marriages, being exempt. At least that's what Sky News reported yesterday.
And two days ago it was: some parishes could officiate them, others couldn't. (Depending on whose decision?).
Some mosques could, others would be exempt....
The divisions and disputes within communities, the potential law-suits that could ensue, and the fact that the "Human Rights" law could be used to force all communities to officiate same-sex marriages within the context of their faith, thus exposing British Law - and indeed traditions valid in ALL religious organisations all over the world - to the Human Rights trump-card, has surely got to be the last act played by the Tory party. It's bound to be their downfall.
What we would have is the Human Rights Act being played against everyone who dares say "booh". In other words, not to officiate same-sex marriages would be breaking this "One-For-All" law.
Yesterday I also read somewhere that in several countries in Europe where same-sex marriages in church became law, the number of straight people getting married in Church precipitated, as they simply abandoned the church.

i cannot remember seeing a synagogue, mosque or hindu/sikh temple in the constituency alex, i doubt that religion plays a big part in most peoples lives here.
dave may be worried about upsetting religious groups but charlie is not under the same pressure.

I was basing my post on the article-link in post 1, Howard.
It's all about religion in that link, and has been so on the news for the past weeks. No mention of Charlie either in post 1.

It's all to do with party whips.
If Charlie dared challenge DC on this one, and DC won....
But would Charlie gain the support of the electorate if he remained silent?
Everything now is boiling down to Tory values, Charlie would need to take a clear and tough stance on this one, and campaign openly to challenge DC (and Osborne). In fact this latter is with the PM on the issue.
Does Charlie have the stamina to stand up and openly challenge the Tory Prime Minister?
Watch this space....

This latest spat is nothing more than diversionary tactics by the government. Keep the people's minds from the direction our economy is heading (down and fast) and fill their heads with dog whistle nonsense like this.
So let's stop everyone thinking about, say, where our money is being wasted
http://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/ (make a note of the dial on the right) and get them worked up over other things.
Debt? - Pah! Yesterday's news.
Exports? - Don't make me laugh there's more important things to worry about.
Right what do we choose next month to distract the plebs I wonder? Hmmmn, how's about something to get people's goat.
I know!!! Let's have another Leveson inquiry.
Brilliant!!!

Charlie will not step out of line until the port issue is resolved because we need the goodwill of the powers that be. His heart is not always where he votes in the parliamentary divisions, for that reason.

When Charlie votes in Parliament, does he not even take into account the constituents, then?
