A lot of residents are shocked at the plan to fell even more trees in Kearsney Abbey ..The statement from the Kearsney Project team state it will give better views across the lake.Too much influence from art people who have not lived in the area for years .

As it happens I was strolling around there the other day. This notice explains the tree business:
I don't know who 'art people' are, but it's probably the work of ecology people, or aesthetic people, or maybe even the tomorrow people. If riparians find this objectionable they'd better look out: there's a frightful orchard going up in Russell Gardens!

As it happens WGS I too have been visiting the area to see what's going on.
One of the things I have found disappointing is the much celebrated 'high quality walking and cycling path' linking (insert sarcasm emoticon here) Dover and River.
https://www.sustrans.org.uk/policy-evidence/the-impact-of-our-work/high-quality-walking-and-cycling-path-dover
The section from Dover is badly signed and not even up to the minimum standards which Sustrans sets itself for cycle paths and as far as I can tell seems to peter out half way along a footpath without even reaching Buckland Mill.
It would be nice if local groups, having of course sourced other peoples money from such as Lottery Money or the Coastal Communities Fund, actually built a fit for purpose spinal route for cyclists, walkers, wheelchair and buggy users all the way from Market Square to Kearsney Abbey.
I suspect that such a facility would do more for Dovorians and visitors to improve Dover and life in general than a thousand squirty Market Square bird-baths though fewer 'consultants' would be able to plan an early retirement on the back of even more power-point presentations ................

I don’t mind the orchard it will replace the trees removed from Russel Gardens.
I’m talking about the Abbey .Cutting down trees for better views.
My daughter summed up the Abbey as a place for quiet reflection, solitude, and tranquility. What is wrong with appreciating the trees. Its not a recreation ground.. we have to protect it .
Only last week I found one of our “Save the rec”1987.leaflets.Those were the days . Now the trees have been felled to increase car parking space the noise from the Alkham Road is much louder.,and the road more visible.
With all the increase in traffic from Whitfield not so peaceful these days .

#5. Not relevant to this thread but I think in addition to the path Bob right champions a proper footpath from the castle via the Bleriot memorial to the White Cliffs would enhance our area. It can be treacherous walking along the short stretch of road that doesn't have a footpath.

Re post #5. I agree Captain that it's rather a 'path' than a path, but it's probably the best that could be done given the predominance of the perverted metal and rubber beast in our economy and culture. Westwards of Buckland Bridge the roads are a little quieter in any case, and once cyclists have respectfully wheeled their way 'twixt church and mill, they can remount in Crabble Avenue and be on their way.
In the case of Kearsney Abbey, my only gripe is that nothing's been made of the proximity of Kearsney Station: it's only 4 minutes from Dover Priory and cheaper than the bus. Yet I can't see any provision for making the journey from the station to the park safe: at the moment you take your life in your hands crossing the Alkham Road.

Pretty sure the church path still has no cycling signs at both ends.

Regarding the trees in kersney Abby, this is DDC and they love chopping down trees. I have never forgiven them for pulling down brook house in the dead of night and cutting down all of the magnificent trees on its approach. Save the planet save the trees.

I was talking to a traffic engineer at the time they were doing the road 'improvements' between the two parks.
Allegedly KCC think the road is far too busy to put in a Pelican type crossing as it would interfere too much with traffic flow.
Instead they have narrowed the carriageway so people have a better chance of running across between cars without getting squashed!
Anyone for Frogger?

Full story on the tree felling.
https://www.dover.gov.uk/Leisure-Culture-Tourism/Leisure-Facilities/Parks--Open-Spaces/Home.aspx
This reminds me of that very old joke where Pat and Mick see a job advertised for tree fellers and one says to the other "what a pity there is only two of us".

Matches WGS post #4 though the emphasis has now changed to the damaged/diseased trees!

Wrong, Karlos. The path has 'no cycling' signs at both ends, but for all the good they do there may as well be no cycling signs at both ends.
